First of all, this is an AWESOME forum!! I did a seach, and found SUPERB information, but I just wanted to get some experts opinions from you all...

I recently purchased a 91 LX vert (AOD) that was bone stock. I am not planning on racing it, and want to keep it fairly stock, just a little fun weekend cruiser. The only thing I have done is the good ol' K & N filter (already done the week I got it of course) and was planning on doing the following:

Pulleys

Cobra/Explorer Intake

rear gear swap

I know there are a ton of these already, but in your opinion should I go with a 3.73 or 4.10 and ballpark how many extra ponies am I loooking at with these upgrades.

Thanks :SNSign:

I would do the 3.73 gears first before anything else. Up here in the Mile High City (Denver), the stock rear made my 90' AOD a real dog. I've just done the rear end so far and it's now a very nice ride. I don't know the number but I would say 0-60 stock is in the 9 second range, with just the 3.73 it's in the 6.5 second range.

My next upgrade will be Headers - maybe exhause at the same time but I haven't decided.

gears won't get you any hp, but it'll make you a ton faster, but keep in mind, you'll lose freeway speedo though.

don't spend a ton on intakes, as with the stock heads you won't see much benefit. The explorer intake is perfect as it can be had relatively cheap.

honestly, you're losing ALL your power through that aod. the 5 speed mustangs, stock for stock are a full second faster than the aod mustangs. If you really want to make your car peppy and bring back the power, modify that aod, or switch it out for a 5 speed. For beginners I would swap in a decent torque converter and a shift kit. those would be my first mods if I was to keep the aod.

I've been running my 93 with AOD for almost 10 years now. While a 5-speed is, without a doubt, going to have more horsepower put to the ground when comparing two otherwise identical cars, there is nothing wrong with an automatic for "a little fun weekend cruiser". I too would recommend doing the gears first and I will say that I've been very happy with my 3.73's. I think 4.10's would make freeway cruising very uncomfortable. After the gears, the next mod I'd recommend would be exhaust: headers, aftermarket X- or H-pipe and the after cat system of your choice. Then heads and the rest. Pullies are an item that makes part of a good overall package, but I'd save the money for the big stuff, then do them towards the end. You can see what I've done in my sig. It makes for a very fun weekend cruiser that more than gets out of it's own way.

Welcome to the site and welcome to the Mustang world.

Welcome aboard.

3.73's would definatly give you a boost in the "seat o pants meter" but nothing on a dyno. I wouldn't waste money on pulllies or the intake at this stage in the game. I enjoy the exhaust tone of these cars, so the first thing i did was get a set of headers, off road h pipe and Flowmasters. Did i get any HP oput of it.......maybe a few, but it made a huge smile on my face every time i bump the key so it was worth it to me.

What are your plans for the car? Street only......mayeb a few time at the 1/4 mile. Road Racing?

Thanks all! I know, first it will be the gears, than I will be happy for another month than the
"I want to go faster bug will bite"

In regards to exhaust, right before the people sold the car, they JUST put new mufflers "quiet" They were in their late 50's and stainless tips, so I hate to just rip it all off, but if I just go with some flowmasters with the basically stock duels it's currently running, will that be disappointing, or will that set-up still sound ok?

Thanks again all for the advise thus far!

Careful. You'll do a few things and love it so much that the bug will bite you and you won't be able to stop modding.
