Opinions on 12" sub for a sealed 1cuft box

Well I found out I did not blow my amp...but I blew one of my voice coils on my Rockford HX2 3112. BLAH.

Anyway I am looking for a replacement to the HX2. I don't want to redo my whole trunk, so I'm looking for a 12" sub that would work in 1 cu/ft seaked box.

I have a 800.2 Rockford amp that I plan on pushing the sub with.

Opinions anyone?

A LOT of speakers will work well in that enclosure. A Resonant Engineering XXX, Elemental DEsigns Ov2, and the Adire Brahma would be my top three picks, with several others that come to mind being very close if not equal in performance. Image Dynamics IDMAX, Stereo Integrity Magnum d2, JL w6, or Audioque.

BTW, when using an Epicenter it's going to be possible to overdrive nearly ANY component. If you didn't set it using an oscilloscope to measure the output, then I'd suggest doing so. Without knowing you, or your skills as an installer/tuner, I just have to give that warning.

I agree with infinity02zinc on the subs. I have a Image dynamics IDQ12. I have had a infinity perfect 12 and a JL 12w3 and they all worked with a 1cf box. I dont have a oscilloscope so the best i can set my gains is with a DMM, seems to work out well.

My whole system was installed by a friend of mine down in FL. He runs SAMM Sound, and has done lots of good work, and got the trophies to prove it. So my guess would be that he tuned everything right the first time.

Now that I don't live in FL anymore, its hard for me to find a good installer around here I can trust.

Can you explain more on how to tune with a O-scope. I am an engineer by profession, I just don't know what you are tuning with it.

talking about setting the gains so that you dont have clipping going to the speakers.

I have searched the web looking for a place that sells the "Resonant Engineering XXX".

Anyone know anywhere? Or are they special order or something?

There's a good tutorial using a DMM from JLAudio right here

Here is one for O-Scope. Good thing you're an engineer- you'll need that expertise.

Ok, I think I have pretty much decided on a JL W6v2 for my replacement.

The only problem is that the W6 only comes in a Dual 4 Ohm.

What are your opinions of setting the W6 up in Series (8 Ohm load) and bridging my rockford 800.2? Its rated 800x1 bridged at 4 Ohm. The W6 says the optimum RMS is 400, so would bridging my 800.2 into 8 Ohm load should give about 400..right?

Is it bad to put too high of Ohm load on an amp? I know going to low can cause the amp to be overworked.

Actually, that amp/sub combo should work out pretty well. Keep in mind, that sub has a good sensitivity, and 400 watts is nothing to cough at. It'll actually be easier on the amp, and it will leave lots of headroom....but I think you could run it at 2ohms mono with little difficulty It WILL do it, but I doubt the extra power would be utilized.
