Opinions on a carb

I really like the autolite 4100 series, I would use it, but get the one with the 1.12 venturi and not the 1.08 venturi. The 1.12 venturi is the carb they used for the 289 Hipo K-code motors.

That's a great carb isn't it!
Those boost venturis are just about as big as Holley's annular boost venturis, and they create a great signal.

Yeah I talked to them and they recommended the 500, I wanted the 600 in case I upgrade the motor later. My main concern is that it doesn't run rich. I've heard the formula foor finding the ammount of carb you need is cid x max rpm/3456

302 x 5500/3456 = 480.61 or a 500 cfm carb.

I used 5500 rpm because it is where my intake makes power up to.

anybody know anything different?

BTW I really, really appreciate all of the help, the LS1 guys laugh at me because I sold an 11 sec SS to restore a Ford, but you guys are a lot cooler!!!!

also my exhaust is Jet Hot Super Comps with a Dr. gas X and Aero chamber mufflers, meg's tips through a GT valence. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like when I start the car!

Your motor will do better with a 650. If it runs a little rich, you can rejet it. But if you like getting beat, then go with the 500. That formula is a purely hypothetical way to figure what a motor needs. But you take any carb and rate it a a certain CFM, and it'll flow a completely different figure on another motor. What it flows is based on a certain pressure differential different bore/stroke/cam combos, create different pressure differentials in operation. Same thing happens when heads are flow tested at different pressure differentials, the end results vary ( cfm ratings)

sweet, I just have always had a bad exhaust smell that gets on me when I drive the car, that makes me scared to make it run rich. I have ordered a body plug kit, dynamat and bought a roll of visqueen to attempt to stop the mysterious fumes....

Even worn out 289's can still net you some cash. Especially if they're std bore and std cranks. It also pays to check your part#'s too see what you actually have, Ford's been known to use up Hi-po parts on regular production motors to get rid of overstock items.

The 4160 isn't a performance oriented 600. It's design was for mileage and low emissions. In my opinion the street Avenger 570 or 670 would be a better choice. But these are a little pricey, new ( remember, I'm cheap LOL) I would seek out a used avenger before shelling out money on a new one. Or a harder to find 650 VS Holley with dual feed bowls ( I don't care for single feed Holleys ,except in 2X4 applications, too plain for me, sort of like having a 350 Chevy LOL )
