overheating, timing is FUBAR and wont start after being ran. ive searched for 45mins.

Ok your symptoms also says lack of power .maf is a major part in that area. Is this close,your car had no zip .so you upped timing .now after you now find running hot and hard cranking .than did tstat .if so i would go back set tdc with plug out to confirm stroke .clean complete air inlet pieces than set timing to specs and start thier if still crappy

Its the guy from your corral trade(you know, with the 98). Could be a loose vacuum line or a dizzy issue. But, lol, i kinda woulda liked to have known you were having some issues with the car. yeah man, i agree with vristang, it sounds like the dizzy wasn't stabbed correctly. i did that when i first rebuilt my motor, i was off by a tooth actually, and the car drove like TOTAL CRAP. started up everytime though. i had to drive it 20 miles from where i live to a shop to have him tell me it was that. i had a feeling it was that from the get-go though. didn't overheat but ran hot, backfiring, spitting and sputtering the whole way. absolutely no power, would barely accelerate.

im not sure but looking at the other issues with your car it sounds alot like an issue i ran into with my 86 F-150. Im not sure if maf cars have a MAP sensor but if they do, check your vacuum line going to it. Mine had the EXACT same issues from your other thread(the rich running and stuff). Changed out the vacuum line going to it and it fixed the issue right away. as for the rest of the problems im not sure. im a 4.6 guy, not a 5.0

Are you sure that the balancer isn't spun?

Had the same thing happen to me on a truck one time. Turns out the balancer had spun and had the timing way advanced.

the car starts up fine. and drives fine. it only does this when it gets warm.

Either a bad TFI or hall effect element in the dizzy

i did sell them. and put the 302 back in. black87stang bought them from me.


and PROBLEM SOLVED my relay on the fan controller was getting hot and turning the fan off. so i wired in a toggle and now im good. drove it for 2 hours tonight and it was fine. i also replaced my ECT sensor.

and as far as the timing goes i think the balancer even though its new spun. so i bought a new one tonight and am gonna swap it here in a minute.

i used a pencil and got TDC, stabbed it on number one then turned it 1/8" to the right and she is running nice now.
