I have a few spots of clear wearing off on the ground FX, and a spot on the roof, I have been wanting to take care of this and have been thinking (uhh ohh :D ). The base coat black is still looking good with no scratches and it just seems the clear is giving out (only the orig. 10year old paint), its just starting to go, can I get it re-cleared? preaty sure I can and just want to know the pro's- cons of this idea. Also does anyone know about how much just a reclear would cost on avg. in other words what is a "you got it up the tail pipe" price and what is a good deal price?? I would think the ground FX could be done sep and the roof would have to be done as one piece (just mask off the rest). I prob. will not have the money until winter but am tring to plan ahead.





I would also consider a silver stipe at this time if I have to re-clear the whole car....(saw the Elanore(sp?) rides and the "reverse" color looked mean).

couple things.....If you try to just re-clear, your gonna have to sand all the clear so it looks sweet(without touching any base coat color, very very tough)..otherwise all the defects that don't get removed will show thru your new clear...NOT GOOD.....

I wanted to do that very thing for my new paint job...no dice I was told..its gonna look like ass...I ended up doing a complete paint job myself...
Since its on the roof I guess you could try it though??? Most likely its gonna need a junior resto....sand with 320...wetsand with 500....mask off the roof...hi- build primer it...re sand again....shoot some base and then clear....buff..polish and your done...Not easy or cheap unless you do it yourself... :(

Theres not alot of clear on a paint job so feathering it out without wacking the base is gonna be tough....a slight recess from your old clear to the new will surely show thru and be noticable....I learned that when a damn bug landed in my first coat of clear... :bang: :bang: ..getting that little mother left the slighest impression in the 1st clear coat....the 2nd coat shows that little defect....see what i mean...that re-clear will flow into any little defect thats not removed....
Im no pro by any means....but I just went thru 2 months of prepping for paint....the littlest freakin defect, dimple, zit, ding, has got to be removed or you live with it....The guys who helped me were super fussy about that chit....they were absolutley correct....do it half ass, and you see it...depends on how fussy you wanna be???
My clear was spanked to, not chipped or flaking, just aged...good luck...
 
Everything RIO said was right on.... You could try doing it yourself and just wetsand with 2000 grit paper and make it all smooth, then spray some clear on yourself. If it doesnt look good then you can always take it to a professional and have them do it and you'll be out $xx.xx of money for the cost of clear and if it works you saved $xxx.xx amount of money by not taking it to a shop. If the clear looks OK after you sprayed it but has runs, you can always go back and wetsand the runs and buff the scratches out. I say try to do it yourself because it isnt all that hard.
 
Thanks guys, I planned on wet sanding and scuffing before the re-clear so the clear would stick and try to avoid the whole "ledge" from the old clear. But the info you gave about that being realy hard makes me think I just might want to wait until I can do the whole car at once.

The largest reason is I am going to be buying a house with in the next year and just want something to make it last a year of two until I can get a whole new paint job done since I realy dont think I can make the 10 year old paint last too much past that.
