If you use the proper paints and prep the pieces, they will last as long as you want them to. 5.0 resto sells some really good paints I hear, never tried them tho.
Yes just prep them very good..fine grit sandpaper and clean pieces well after. I used Krylon for plastic and it turned out very well in my opinion. Also 2 thin coats are better than one thick one, or more, again prep is most important. Good paint though too, I guess.
Heres a quick shot at my interior. Custom painted console to match the car. Sanded down with a DA sander 80 then 220. Hand sanded down to 800. Use filler primer and base coat clear coat.
The pic does not do justice. As the color is b92p w/added blue pearl. Really shines up nice when the light comes in when the t-tops are off. Ooh and notice the ashtray delete? Thats epoxy filler , kind of solved the problem of it not working and looks the nuts.
I'm using plastic interior paint from cjpontparts. I cleaned it with PPG Acryli-clean (DX330) prior to painting.
Also I used 400 sandpaper and a red scotch bright before cleaning, you might try a gray scotch bright first and if it works well, don't bother with the red.
Word on the sand lightly. If you sand of the texture you will notice it as the finish will be inconsistent as you will see texture in some areas none in others. The scotch bright will do the trick. You just want a good clean surface for the paint to adhere well to.
Funny you guys mentioned this.. i have a friend and her and her husband just sanded down the entire dashboard and made the whole thing smooth to where you cant see any of the texture... and it looks impressive. no high or low spots.. ill have to see if i cand get her to send me a few pics.
