I'm trying to install new parking brake cables into the bracket under the car. Is there anyway to get more slack out of the cable attached to the parking brake lever? The bracket is really tight against the body and I can't seem to pull it far enough to attach the new cables. Any advice would help, thanks.

Control Assembly

Releasing Cable Tension

CAUTION: If any component in the parking brake system requires service or if the rear axle is removed, the cable tension must be released as follows:

1. Place parking brake control in released position.
2. Remove floor console. Refer to «Section 01-12».
3. With an assistant inside vehicle, raise vehicle on a hoist. Refer to «Section 00-02».
4. Have another assistant pull equalizer rearward approximately 26-63mm (1-2 1/2 inches) to rotate self-adjuster reel backward.
5. Insert a steel lock pin through holes in lever and control assembly. This locks ratchet wheel in the cable released position.

CAUTION: Do not remove the steel lock pin until the cables are connected to the equalizer. Pin removal releases the tension in the ratchet wheel causing the spring to unwind and release tension. If the pin is removed without the cables attached, the entire assembly must be removed to reset spring tension.

Removal

1. Place control in released position.
2. Remove floor console. Refer to «Section 01-12».
3. Release cable tension as outlined.
4. Disconnect front cable and equalizer from control.
5. Remove bolts retaining control assembly to floor pan. Remove control assembly.

CAUTION: Do not remove the steel lock pin until the cables are connected to the equalizer. Pin removal releases the tension in the ratchet wheel causing the spring to unwind and release tension. If the pin is removed without the cables attached, the entire assembly must be removed to reset spring tension.

Installation

1. Route front cable and equalizer around control assembly pulley. Insert cable anchor pin in pivot hole in ratchet.
2. Connect rear cables to equalizer.
3. With cable attached, position control assembly on floor pan. Install retaining bolts. Tighten to 14-21 N-m (10-16 lb-ft).
4. Remove lock pin from control assembly to reset tension.

WARNING: KEEP FINGERS CLEAR OF CONTROL ASSEMBLY.

5. Apply and release control lever several times. Ensure that parking brakes apply and release and that BRAKE indicator lights when brakes are applied.
6. Install console. Refer to «Section 01-12».
