Parking Brake Help

Hi gang,

My '68 does not have a parking brake assembly at all. No handle, cable, nothing. I have ordered the entire setup (used) from a Mustang parts yard.

Can someone give me a run down of what attaches where and things I need to look out for during installation?

Surely someone has a parking brake in their 67/68 and knows how it works?

If it's the same as 67, you'll have a ratcheting assembly with a handle that attaches with bolts under the dash. At the end there is a wheel that the cable goes acroos, through the floorboard, and to and equalizer assembly under the floorpans. There are a few springs and gadgets there for adjustment and two cables attach here. Each of these goes to your rear brake assemblies. This is very general but when you get your parts, post again and we'll try to help you through it step by step.

I seem to remember on my '65 that there was an "arm" of sorts on the transmission crossmember for the parking brake cable to run to but my '68 crossmember doesn't have it.

At any rate, we'll see how everything lays out when I get to it this weekend and hopefully it won't be rocket science!

Just a side note: any shop manual (including Haynes, which I know for sure has this) should include a diagram of it. If you can't figure out where some of the underbody arms go (mine has 2 or 3 i think) then consult a shop manual. I'm having a similar issue right now. Except mine is one of geting the cable to actually fit on the underdash mechanism. I ordered a cable, got it , and the ball on the end was too big, and it's a PITA to grind.

I have the Haynes Repair Manual (1964 1/2 thru 1973) but the only parking brake diagram is for a pedal type. I have been thinking about ordering the Ford Manual on CD from NPD. Anyone know if it would it have the diagrams on it that I would need?

That's interesting. I have the haynes manual and it shows the parking brake. The Ford one would probably be more helpful. I tell you what, I can't promise it'll be this week, but next week I can crawl under my car and take some shots.
