I learned years ago not to buy parts from Schucks (checker, kragen) unless it's a last resort.

Anyways, it was a last resort yesterday when I was trying to find a power steering rack for my '90 stang. After searching through his computer, the parts guy informed me: "those don't exist". I just hung up.

My friend called up a couple minutes later to talk to the wholesale parts guy who he knows, and told him the counter guys were morons.

I wonder if this is the same guy who, a few years ago, refused to sell me brake pads for my car, because "LX mustangs never came with 5.0's", and he wouldn't sell me the "wrong" part.

Sorry, just had to vent.

I feel your pain and frustration. I too encounter those who know next to nothing and yet work at an autoparts store.

Sometimes you have to make these clowns work.
If it`s not on their stupid computer,they think the part doesn`t exhist.

Tell them to look in a parts manual if it`s not on their screen.

I`ve actually taken photo copies of parts I needed from the mfg`s website to the parts store after hearing them say,"oh we can`t get that".

Once they see the picture and part number and do a little searching,I get my part ordered in most cases.
Best to go in person instead of over the phone.

Look up the part # for the item you want on www.partsamerica.com (this site is for Advance Auto, Kragen, Shuck's, & Checker part chains for what it's worth) and then go into the store. Tell them to type in the number you've written down in the little search function they have, the rack is going to be specifically listed under "rack & pinion."

I've got a buddy that's a major gearhead who runs a NAPA in the town where I used to live. The guys at the local NAPA are just counter drones, so if I need to get the right part, I call my buddy for the part number so I can tell the local boobs what I need. If I spend any real money, I budget some time to drive an hour and fifteen minutes each way and go visit my buddy in person.

I stopped buying anything other than oil or wax at Schucks in the early 80's when they couldn't sell me the proper waterpump for a SBC in three tries.
