if you set the stops too short and are not fully engaged you can damage your transmission. Sometimes the shifter will pop out of gear too.

I just talked to a guy from tremec transmissions. He told me if I add a aftermarket shifter to remove the stops. He said you cant over shift the transmission. He also said most people who install them do it wrong by setting stops too short. He said you will do damage to transmission if you are not fully engaged. Has anyone removed their stops?

I was told the same thing but I don't trust it even if it does say it on Tremec's web site. Remember, this is not a TKO it's Ford's design. Ford's design=bare minimum. Love my tri ax though

yes this is true but why would you set you stops short???? this is not rocket science. you back the stops out. put the shifer is third gear. move the stop up and lock it in place. then go into 2nd gear move that stop up lock it in place. the only way you go do this wrong is if you tighen the stop so it moves the **** handle or try to set the stop without putting the shifer in gear. I must be really stupid becaue I don't see how this is an issue at all. internal stops or not if you do this right you can't hurt anyting.

I am sooooo sick of reading posts debating stops,. First of all, the 3650 has stops. This means nothing because the shifter still feels like jello so putting in a shifter is a good idea. Can the aftermarket stops hurt you? Um yeah if you don't set them right. Will they come loose?? Um yeah, if you don't use thread lock and don't lock the bolts properly. Is it a bad idea to leave in the aftermarket stops in? If you have to ask this question, you don't know the basic fundementals on how they work. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR PROPERLY INSTALLED STOPS TO HURT YOUR TRANNY, this is fact we have all proven it, it is simple basic merchanical logic. Anyone who tells you different is a moron period.

I did not say properly installed stops will hurt. I simply quoted the guy that said most people install them wrong. He advised to take stops out of shifter.

I believe the instructions say that.

And also on almost all sites that offer installation tutorials.

He is full of crap, it's close to impossible to install them wrong... How hard is it to put the car in gear, touch the stop with the handle, then back off the stop a half turn? Sounds like he is implying that we are idiots. Sorry but it sounds like "most the people" he talks about is a figment of his imagination. Also when you shift a stock 3650 you easily feel like it would break if you pushed hard enough. The aftermart stops , stop the shift just below your hand, which feels 1 million times stronger. Oh yeah, I meant no hard feelings towards you at all, you actually took the time to do proper research But when you put in the shifter, you will know what we all know first hand.

MRT Home: Press Releases :

03.13.03
Tremec Transmissions
Service Bulletin 03.01

Subject:
Aftermarket Shifter Stops

Transmission Models Affected:
All

Severe damage may be caused by installing an aftermarket shifter with "shift stops" on any TREMEC transmission. All TREMEC transmissions are designed and manufactured with built-in shift stops to prevent over shifting. Therefore; shift stops on aftermarket shifters are totally unnecessary when used on a TREMEC transmission. TREMEC "TR series" transmissions have multiple shift rails with shift stops on the gearing. TREMEC "T series" transmissions have a single shift rail system with stops built into the guide plate.

When installing an aftermarket shifter on a TREMEC transmission it is best to remove the shift stops to avoid miss adjustment, and the potential of the screws vibrating lose. A misadjusted shift stop can cause an under-shift, which may lead to a gear jump-out situation. If the transmission jumps out of gear, the shift fork can be bent causing permanent damage to the transmission. Shift forks can also be damaged by "clash shifting". A clash is caused by a missed shift.

Neither an "under-shift", nor a "clash shift" can be prevented by shift stops. TREMEC shift forks are designed to take loads up to 1,000 lbs. However, a gear jump-out may well exceed 1,000 lbs. of force, which may result in a permanently damaged transmission.

Like the Ford Service Department needs the ammo with these already existing transmission problems.

Another way of looking at this... shift stop debate.
If the aftermarket shift stops are PROPERLY adjusted then you are using the built in shift stops.

I’m easy on my tranny but when it comes to a Cobra or LS1 you can bet I’m bangin the hell of my gears and the stops are there for my own personal comfort level.

The stops are redundant, so why use them? I backed the stops all the way back on my 2003 and have had zero tranny problems in the last 7k miles. The problem is not that people are installing them wrong, the problem is that it is a high vibration area. IF the stops aren't locked extremely tight then they vibrate loose and can inch forward which could result in a short shift and a bent shift fork.

Why risk it? Why do something that serves no purpose and could potentially cause harm?

Guys, the only important thing about those stops is that you set the nuts that hold them in place very tight. The big problem with the stops is them coming loose over time.

They CAN'T hurt if they are set tight and correctly.

Acutally all you need is a little locktite, this should be obvious since they give you a hex nut instead of a lock nut. I have set the stops all of one time in two years, which was the first time. And they are not redundant, they stop ALL pressure from even reaching the tranny, that is there purpose. the tranny stops are still a internal part if the tranny and IMHO wil give you a false sense of security.
