PI cam swap on a 98Gt

I am also interested in the cam swaps....

for those of you with the comp cams what did they cost and where do you buy them? directly from comp?

Also did you guys need a tune afterwords??

Any dyno numbers?

it's hard to really beat the PI cams for the price.....

for those of you wondering about the intake...I did the swap onto the NPI heads using RTV sealant...I had to do it twice to get it to seal properly but it's working fine for now..and feels alot stronger however I do not have any hard numbers yet.. :bang:

I have the Comps on my car and I love them. I bought them from Summit for around 600. The price ranges anywhere from 500-600. They are much better than the PI cams. The exhaust sound at idle is amazing. That alone made me want the cams. Next up for me is the PI intake. Oh I forgot the computer issue is not bad, just the idle needs to be messed withand probably the a/f ratio to. My car is still not tuned and it has been about 2 months now.

The cam swap is a must. Unless money is an issue I'd go with one of the aftermarket cams instead of the PI's. You will see a gain with the PI's but I've seen dyno graphs about 2 times the HP gain with the Comps or VT's. Myself, I'm waiting for the cash to do the cams and intake at the same time. Save me some install time.

So from what I am getting out of all of this, the Comp cams alone, with no head porting or polishing is giving immpressive results on the 96 - 98 NPI heads......is that right? To me immpressive would be 25 - 35 RWHP on a non-supercharged car. I think that is what Comp and Crane are touting, but I took that with a grain of salt.

Thats what they said about comp cams in the last 5.0 mag. They put some mild street cams in a 96 and got 25 extra peak hp and a 35 hp difference in the curve at one point. Makes me wonder if the headswap is worth it since you cant supercharge afterwards. Have been thinking of cams for a while, but I didn't want to screw up my a/f ratio and need a custom chip after I just got the microtuner.

Can anyone relay the nuts and bolts of doing this cam swap (just a few pointers)? I have only done this on an overhead valve motor. Is there a good manual to use that walks you thru it, or are you guys just natural gearheads and figure this stuff out as you go? I would think this would be quite a bit more complicated than your average 302.

The intake swap was worth it and it's a good DIY project. Can easily be completed in about 4 hours if you have all the parts and have an extra set of hands. Just be carefull pulling the injectors out, I broke one and had to shell out 55 bucks for a new one.

Cams are great before or after a headswap because they can be used in either the NPI or PI heads.

Do I have to get one as soon as I put them on or can I drive a little bit becuase there isnt a dyno around here
Ryan just did his full swap and hasn't been tuned yet. He said it pulls nice and runs strong. Alot of people strongly reccommend getting a tune A.S.A.P. though. There is also some additional HP/TQ to be had after a good tune. The final call is yours, but IMO...I would do the tune sooner than later.

Heres a pretty good explaination: http://www.modulardepot.com/?show=articlesdet&aid=39

Is there a certain mileage when pi cams/heads/intakes should not be installed? I have 55,000 miles on my pony, and I am thinking about this whole pi swap idea, but is it too late for me? Also, can you just install a pi intake, without heads and cams? Would it make any difference over stock intake on my 98 gt?
I'm the first person that did the camswap, and I did it at 175K miles using cams that had 20K on them.
This was the result-red is before, blue is after:

Hey Johnny, what kind os supercharger are you running with those cams?
None. That dyno sheet was after the camswap with the old stock engine @ 175K miles.
At that time I had the following done to the car:
Underdrive pulleys
Stock manifolds with compression bent 2.25" dual exhaust
Original NPI intake
75mm BBK TB
80mm L-MAF
SCT/InjectTech tune

I've got a set of Comps in the new engine...and as soon as I get the trans back together..it goes to the track.
