OK I will be buying some roller rockers today...I just hate looking at those stock ones also whats needed to install a main girdle?? im just going to go ahead and do it right the first time, what oil pan will fit our cars??? and when i do a girdle, do i just take off one cap at a time and torque it down?? to what??

When I built my TFS 331 I went with a 7qt Canton Oil Pan. Part #15-620S. I purchased a kit with the pan, pickup, main girdle w/longer ARP hardware, windage tray and dipstick off ebay. Pan and everything fit very well with the only thing that I needed to do was to grind a bit of material off the oil pump because the bolt head was interfering. I had to take a very small amount of material off the pump for it to clear.

If you are going to get a main girdle some require the main caps to be machined. The Canton girdle does not require this as there are spaces for the caps to fit into. If you do get a girdle start over. Take all bolts out and retorque in sequence to spec using longer arp hardware. I think spec was around 60 ft lb.

And don't forget to measure the distance the pickup tube is from the bottom of the pan. It may need a bit of tweaking. hope that helps and good luck with the build.

Get everything you want while the motor is out of the car. It may take more time to get it done but in the end you will be much happier. Good idea on the rockers, getting them before the motor goes back in.

I could not be so sure about that myself

But ... It does make one think about it AFAIK

I see it as a similar thing to the OEM Cobra intake

I've never cared for them in stock form
but
When Tom does his magic on one ... he has data that supports it flows
right in there with the after market intakes

It just might be the same kind of deal when comparing
his ported Edel to a stock Holley

If you dont mind me asking, how much did all of that run you? Ive been salivating over a 331 stroker for 2.5 years now, and Im a poor college kid who makes NOWHERE near enough money to think about a new stoker right now. I realllllllllllllllyyyyyyy want one though.

You are looking at $6-$7k minimum if you want a good longblock with supporting cast.


My advice:

GET THROUGH COLLEGE FIRST

You need to have patience. I got my stang in 94, didnt get the Vortech until 2003, and Ive been contemplating my stroker for 2 years now, and maybe still another year before I get it done... AND I am 42!!

Do NOT finance more than about 1/4 of the cost or you will regret it.

(Im done with the fatherly lecture now)

good advice. i have 4 more years before my kids are grown up and i can set up my shop in my garage and get down to the business of doing my own work.

problem is, by then i'll be too old and weak to be able to pick up a wrench.

the more mature you get, the more you will be able to control the urge to act on impulse.

i might have just what you are looking for. after my 410 is in, i hope to take my 302 block and build a 331 for the learning experience.

the guy in the cube next to me is the son of the guy who built my motor ... he works at my office because he had to pay his bills, and the money from the shop didn't quite cover his expenses, but he has built many motors and knows his stuff. he says he will help me learn how to do it right.

i've been buying the parts off people over on corral. i already have the rotating assembly (probe pistons, forged rods, cast crank), heads (ported windsor senior), intake (pro products typhoon), and cam (comp xe-274-hr).

after i am done (i am going to work on it during my lunch break!) i'm going to dyno it and then sell it at cost.

i'm at about $1500 right now. i'll probably be at about $2500 when i'm done. i hope to have it done by the end of the summer.

I'm not doubting your word, but I'm wondering about the equipment used. Think about your numbers - at 4,500 rpm you are making 440lb-ft and then 700 rpm later you are down to about 330lb-ft. How often does an engine drop 110lb-ft in 700 rpm? Almost never!

Got a graph of that dyno?

440lb-ft x 4,400 rpm / 5250 = 377RWHP
333lb-ft x 5,200 rpm / 5250 = 330RWHP

I sure hope his HP didn't peak at 4,500 rpm

Something aint right............

This is uncorrected numbers on a DynaPack hub dyno 90 deg. day w/ 100% humidity (the dyno attaches to the wheel hubs, so theres no tire slippage etc). Oh and motor is untuned stock cpu. Been running like this for 2 yrs. now. I am emissions exempt now so I will be going for a bigger custom grind from ED and a nice dyno tune and hopefuilly I will see some bigger numbers and better drivability. Shooting for 380ish to the wheels....

440 rwtrq from a 331!!! Please post your dyno, thats incredible.

Although I'm pretty sure thats a typo as 340 rwtrq would be right on the money. Great combo either way.

I had a budget set at the begining for 4k right now at at over 6k going on 7k for sure, but keep in mind im building a longblock from scratch. New bolts, nuts everything because my old motor is still in the car and when this engine goes in it's going to be a one day job here at my house, no time ti remove and install old parts, just the necessary stuff, you would save quite a bit of money if you have a 331 shortblock, heads and the usual oil pump, timing chain set, cam, lifters, rockers, pushrods, etc. I have a new manifold and all for the build- up also, plus it still needs to be tuned.
