I realize this isn't a Mustang, but I figured you guys might be able to help me out. My wife drives the "family car", a 1997 Crown Vic Police Interceptor. The car has about 130,000 on its 4.6 and still runs great. The only problem is the car pings under hard load even with high test gas. Should the car even need high test or is this abnormal? I added some Chevron/Techron fuel system cleaner thinking it might be combustion chamber deposits at fault. It helped a good bit, but not totally. Is there more crud to get out or are there some other tricks to this motor I don't know about. I'm a 5.0 guy so some of this 4.6 stuff is new to me.

One pass of fuel cleaner won't get everything. Try a few bottles over the next few fill ups alternating between stops. You may try taking it to a shop for a good fuel system clean-up. They cost about 50 bucks.

The timing shouldn't be off unless you have a problem in the timing system like a chain going bad or a gear or something. That's unlikely. I have over 140k on my Stang and don't have a problem there.

ahh crap, im sorry. i forget that the 4.6's dont have a rotor like the 5.0's.

i had a HUGE timing issue with my 1995 GT. and i saw the thread name and thought of timing. didnt even stop to think that the 4.6's are WAY diff.... 90 lx5spd disregard what i said

try a tuneup, plugs fuel filter and make sure it is not running hot. could also be the EGR. the car should run on 87. Water wetter can help in the cooling system but should not fix the problem, if it is a cooling issue.

I suppose the cooling system could be flushed. It looks a little murky. Do 4.6s use the green stuff or Dex-Cool? I figure its the green stuff. I'll also take a look at tuning it up. Thanks for all the input guys.

if the Vic is the same as my GT then yes, Jiffy Lube can flush and refil it. I used the green as the orange is more corosive (sp).

on a side note I'm also pinging every so often even after 2 cans of seafoam through the block and through the tank on 89 octane. mods in sig if it matters. not wanting to hijack, but since they are both 4.6 and pinging :)

What do ya know my 97 is doing the same thing, with only 40,000 miles. So far I have cleaned the MAF and that helped but didn't correct the problem. Next I plan on doing a tune up(plugs, fuel filter, coolant) and see if that helps. Keep me updated and I'll do the same.

What is a tunable inductions CAI? sounds like that may be leaning you out.
