Please answer a few quetions for my mechanic

I received an email from my mechanic who works on the side for me and I can never understand what he is saying because of how ignorant I am about cars
Anyway, he wrote me this...
I changed the oil in the tranny. The stuff that came out had some "silver shine" or small amount of metallic flakes. More than likely the blocking rings ,shifting forks and some gears are showing there wear. I do think when we put the clutch in that will help the shifting a lot. I t is hanging up on the Throw out bearing, that is why its getting harder to push in the clutch pedal. Probably the Front Input Housing wear the throw out bearing rides is getting burrs and scratched. May be lack of grease in throw out bearing hub?

Additional note, I took the shifter out to fill the tranny oil(there may be some oil burn the header on pass. Side- spilled on it.) and found that one of the spring bushings is gone. Also I do not know if this tranny uses a nylon bushing(isolator) between the bottom of the Shift Rod to shift rail, but there is not one in there?...

can someone answer those questions and explain to me what this means? I will relay the info to him.

Ok, I'll give it a try. I think what he is trying to say is that when he changed the transmission fluid he noticed the "silver shine" to the fluid. This indicated that you have wear in the transmission. He thinks its likely just wear. He also thinks that the throwout bearing (part that presses on clutch plate when you press on the pedal) is hanging up on the bearing retainer. This is why its getting hard to press the clutch pedal down. He thinks it might be a lack of grease causing the where. Personally, I'd replace the throwout bearing retainer with a new steel retainer.

He spilled some transmission fluid on the exhaust so you might notice that burn a while. I'm not exactly sure about the rest.

I like the above-interpretation. That's really a feel thing because some metal shavings are indeed normal.

If you pay for a TOB and input shaft retainer job, you might as well have the clutch replaced if you have the slightest doubts about it. It's just a little extra labor.

One overlooked item is the clutch cable. A cheapo POS can give a difficult or notchy clutch pedal feel.

Like you said, there's a 3 dollar plastic cup on the bottom of the shift handle. It keeps the shifter handle from rattling and removes a little slop.

Jim,
You could find those parts new, but I would hit the j/y for them.
It should be easy to pull them without pulling the trans.

I may be abel to get a diagram later, but I am sure others can post diagrams as well...

Te shifter bushing is 3 bucks from Ford.

The shifter spring will likely need to come from the shifter manufacturer, unless you wanna rig it up with something from the hardware store.

i had the cluthc cable replaced last year iwht an adjustable one. i think it was a cheap one, maybe a summit or jegs brand. i have a new clutch laying around that i will have him replace as well.

when i have him change the clutch, is it more of a hassle to change the cable after the cluthc is done? i am thinking of just having the clutch and TOB changed w/o doing the cable to see if the cable is still good (seeing as how it only has a few hundred miles on it). OR, does it make sense to do the cluthc AND cable at the same time? I went to ford dealer today and they sell the cables for 167 DOLLARS!!!!! WTF i cant afford 167 bux for a ford cable!

You can get a new cable from Diverified for 50 bucks shipped.

It is no more or less work to have a clutch cable replaced during a trans removal or at another time. The swap takes even a novice about 15-30 minutes probably. If it's me swapping parts, I'd do the cable first because it's easier. The problem is that some aftermarket cables are so poorly made that after a week, they bind really badly. I dont know (or remember if it was mentioned) what cable you have, so I just threw that out there.

FWIW, the shifter cup bushing is 3 dollars at a Ford dealer. I'd just get a new one from them or a resto house (LRS sells them too).

The spring for the shifter might need to come from your shifter manufacturer.

could not find "diverified" online in any search i performed.could you give me some info as to phone number/website? thanks
i think i will buy a cable and see how she is after the clutch is installed. if it is still feeling tough, i can have the cable installed after. if not, i can return the cable. thanks for replies!
