My 94 5.0 has about 110,000 km on it, thats about 68,000 miles. Recently ive been having to add a liter of oil every month or so, and Im not sure why. There doesnt seem to be any leaks, nothing smells of burning oil and theres no trace in the driveway. It also doesnt blow blue or smell like oil, Ive tried cold startups, revs, hard accelerations, etc.. and Ive never seen any blue. With this much oil being used, it must be going somewhere? It seems strange to have an issue like this with relatively low mileage, the car has always been maintained too. Please help troubleshoot my problem

It may not be a problem. What mileage are you talking about in that 1 month or so? IMHO a litre every 2-3k would not be out of the ordinary. Oil is consumed as the cylinders are lubricated and some will get by the valve stem seals as the car gets older. I personally would worry until you see blue smoke from the pipes.

I know a mechanic who says that the 5.0 HO cylinders are not percisely fitted to the bores, this allows more oil to be consumed than other engines. Is there any truth to this?

I probably burn a litre every 1,000 km on average, maybe a bit more kms. The reason I'm asking is because Ive been thinking about a mild h/c/i or a small nitrous shot and I dont want to put stress on an unhealthy motor and find myself in an expensive situation. Another question I have is... could this problem be helped with a new top end? (such as the trickflow) or is the problem most likely caused by the bottom end?

It really depends on how you drive the car too. when i drive my car really hard, before 3000 miles oil change are due i have to put a quart in.

But i have never heard of 5.0 HO cylinders are not precisely fitted to the bores...i do not know if this is true or not???

Like mentioned.. a qt between oil changes is normal on these motors anyway...If I was using a qt every 1km, which is under a 1000 miles then Id be thinking I have valve seal issues or some chit..I would consider that much oil excessive...you do H/C/I and you might worsen if its rings...do a compression and leakdown test since you see theirs an issue.

Pull the plugs...they all look the same?? any oily or black ones...

Hows the gas milage, is it woofing fuel??, lotsa fuel will tend to wash the cyl walls and hence waer the rings early...

Does the oil smell and look normal...

You run any oil additives???

Your PCV system in working order...valve itself good and baffle clean??

How exactly does the PCV cause oil comsumption? Ive had a few people suggest I check it out. Does it stick open or something allowing positive crankcase pressure to shoot oil mist into the intake manifold and burn it? Would this small amount of mist not cause the car to blow blue?

Since the other day my car has been giving me a check engine light after 5 minutes of driving that stays on for the remainder of the drive. If i turn the car off, it will go off.. until i drive 5 more minutes. I will go check my codes and maybe this will point me in the direction of my oil consumption

any other troubleshooting suggestions? Also, when these 5.0s start using oil, is it usually a ring issue or a head issue?

my 94 has 123 on it, I did have to take it apart to do some rod bearings to eliminate cold start knocks, other than that looked great, doesnt use oil. I'm using 10/40 synthetic, what are you using?
The dude that said "5.0 HO cylinders are not percisely fitted to the bores" is an idiot, dont go back to that guy. probably tell you you need piston return springs next.
Throw a couple bucks at it, the new pcv valve is cheap, make sure you get the screen that goes underneath it too, and if youre still running 5/30 step it up a notch.
