Hello everybody. I've got a little problem here and I was hoping that you might be able to help me out with it. I recently bought a 1968 fastback mustang. Everything on it is stock and all original. The previous owner wanted to do a full out restoration on the car but ran out of money (this seems to be a pretty big problem for many enthusiasts) so when I bought it the car was stripped down to pretty much nothing. Right now im having the engine and everything put back into the car and having an manual transmission put into it. My brother thinks I should put in a hydrolic clutch into the car while my dad on the other hand thinks i should keep it a cable clutch. What are the pros and cons of the cable clutch and the hydrolic clutch. My brother says that the conversion is totally worth it but my dad thinks hes a stupid kid who is to anal to know the first thing about what I should do with the car. This is getting a lot longer than I wanted so ill cut it short. I just want to know if my brother has any sense at all in wanting the hydrolic clutch or is my dad right with keeping it a calbe clutch.

please help me out

if im not mistaken, a hydraulic clutch will take less clutch pedal pressure to engage and disengage the clutch.

I once had a CJ-5 that was converted to a hydraulic clutch....I hated that friggin thing (the clutch). And if you thinking bleeding brakes is a pain-in-the-a**, just wait till you have to do a clutch. Stick with the cable clutch.

pabear is right, a 68 would have had a mechanical clutch system. if you are restoring the car back to stock it would be more than adequate leaving it as is, however if you are planing a resto-mod with lots of horsepower and a heavy duty clutch i would seriously consider converting to a cable or hydraulic style clutch. cable style would be cheapest, possibly even cheaper than having to replace all the parts for the stock mechanical clutch. hydraulic is definately easier on the left leg than the the other options though.

Thanks for the input it really helps. Sorry about that you're right its not a cable clutch is a mechanical clutch. I don't know if I mentioned this before but I know next to nothing about cars. This is all a HUGE learning experience for me. So since im probably only going to be driving this car around town and back and forth to and from school the stock clutch system is totally 100% fine right? I dont plan on doing anything special to the car to try to give it any extra speed or hp. Thanks again. Ian

as long as all the linkage pieces are in good shape you should be ok, if any of that stuff needs to replaced though, you might consider the cable clutch conversion, like i said it might be cheaper in the long run. the stock z-bar on the mechanical linkage is notorious for bending and in some cases even breaking if it gets in a bind
