The spring end should be going toward the engine. In other words, the spring end will go "down" and the short end faces "up".

???? doesnt the tstat sit horizontally? i dont get what you mean about down and up.

How do you tell that there is coolant in the oil? (just curious in case I ever see this issue)

Floating in the pan after you drain it?

its everywhere, you can see it in the fill neck, dipstick, everywhere, you cant miss it!

Ok, i took the lower manifold off, and there doesnt seem to be a problem with it. There is however alot of really wet grime around the water pump area, so im thinking that it might be that leaking. What is it that is actually leaking? the seal on the shaft that goes from the timing cover to the water pump? what do i have to replace, and can anyone do a quick writeup on how to fix it?

Scratch that last part. The spring goes toward the engine.

I was just thinking......

When you swapped the lower ..... how did you seal off the front & rear of the intake? I've heard alot of people having problems there .... and the best way to do it is to put a large bead/strip of RTV along both sides.

Also, is coolant coming out of the water pump peep hole?

i dont see anything comming out of the top weep hole. All i see is that the water pump and timing cover are wet looking, and all the grime on them is very wet. I do belive that my thermostat was in backwards though, whatever that means, cuz it did flow coolant.... i dont know? is it possible that the thermostat being backwards just put alot of pressure on the water pump and blew the timing gasket?
What all do i need for the timing cover? the gasket for that, the gasket for the water pump to plate and thats it?

When i did my lower i used rtv on the ends. It sealed good, because when i took it off you could see where it smushed and that it sealed good.

Floating in the pan after you drain it?

The coolant is heavier than oil, it will settle to the bottom of the pan after a little while. When I blew a head gasket, it sat overnight, and I pulled the drain plug in the morning, and nothing but straight antifreeze came out for a few seconds. When mixed together (like while and right after running) it makes the oil look milky.

When filling up my rad to see if the timing cover leaks, i saw a drop of water come out between the head and block, so obviously there is a problem with the head gasket.. yay, now I get to do this again. ANyone want to buy my car for 6800 dollars in its current condition, maybe they are a better mechanic then me, I just want to sell this so i can buy books for school... its sad really haha
