I was putting my water pump back on my 289. I put gasket sealer on the pump and put it to the block. i began to put the bolts in and started them all. I found that one bolt did not want to snug up so i tightened it some more but then i thought about it, that was one of the bolts that holds my alt bracket. I pulled the bolt back out and water leaked out of the hole (see pic below). I thought that was weird, does this bolt hole usually have water in it. I know it is the hole right by the hose going to the radiator, but i do not remember it being wet. If it is not i have messed up big time,a.k.a. punched through a water jacket. please someone help!!!!

Stands to reason, if once your bracket is on and the bolt is in, then no leak to the outside. Can you push a screw driver all the way through? One thing I dont get is...if your water pump is off, how can there be water in the block. Seems to me not a problem at this point without other info.

bracket is back on but i have not fired the car up. i did not see it leak after i put the bracket back on. there is still water in the block even after you take the pump off right? water jackets run throughout the block so i guess it would still have water in it

You need to put thread sealer on some of the bolts. they're open to the water jackets on the backside. If you don't use thread sealer, they WILL leak later on. And also be extremely careful you don't over torque those long 5/16 bolts, they break very easily.
