Pokageek's Drivetrain Review - Gforce Transmission made by promotion

Good to hear things are on the up and up with your car. I followed you thread a little bit and know you weren't happy with the car.... Things have a weird way of working themselves out... :nice:

The noise you hear is the whine from the gears. Even their helical gearsets have a very shallow pitch so there not exactly quiet. Gforce makes some special oil for the tranny that quiets it down a whole lot. It has the consistency of gear oil but its red and smells like ATF, when I got my kit from G-force it came with a bottle (1qt). You pour that bottle into the tranny and fill the rest of the way with synthetic ATF and it gets pretty quiet. I keep an extra bottle in my garage so when I change the tranny fluid I have it there. THen I get a new bottle when I get around to it. Heres a link to it...I believe a bottle is under $20 shipped.

BTW, don't pour it thru the shifter its thick and it takes forever to drain down from the shifter to the tranny. Hope this helps.

Hey, how did you end up with a .64 5th gear? I know if you use the stock 5th you end up with .59 (thats what I have) and G-force doesnt have a .64 5th listed. Regardless, yea 5th is really tall. Once I finish my cam swap I will be changing my clutch and changing my 5th gear ratio to .73 I believe (got that stuff from promotion too). Going from 1:1 to 1:0.59 sucks with my 3.55 rear end so I know how you must feel with that 3.27 rear. But then again I'm only working with 331 cubes so its prolly worse for me than it is for you.:p

Thanks for the ratios Keith :nice:

Yes 2.94 with 3.27 is a bit tall

I had a friend with a Kit Cobra running a fe motor with 3.25 9" rear
and he had a 2.9 something first in the trans

Even with the torque the fe produced

We both agreed ... 3.50's would have been just about right :)

Helical Synchronized Ratios (g force kit).............Stock 94-95 T-5
2.94....................................................................3.35
1.94....................................................................1.99
1.34....................................................................1.33
1.00....................................................................1.00
.59* or .73..........................................................0.68

*NOTE: The 0.59 ratio is the ratio you get when you reuse your stock 5th gear with the g-force gear set.

My basic kit came with an input shaft a new cluster shaft and the paired 1, 2, and 3 gears. I didn't get any of the fancy optional stuff like the upgraded main shaft, beefed up case etc. Just the basics.

There seems to be many options for 5th according to Promotion. They sell G-force 5th gears in .73, some other companys gears (also beefed up like Gforce), and stock type tremec gears in many different ratios.

I got a new stock type 5th (going in when I do the clutch) cuz I cant imagine breaking 5th gear and it was cheaper than the fancy beefy ones (havent broken my current one and its been 4 yrs). I got a .73 ratio cuz I did the math and with my 3.55 rear end and my new cams estimated max output at 6200-6300 rpms I should be making max hp in 5th at about 180-185mph which I believe should be very close to top speed for my car with the new cam and tune. Hopefully my math is right.

The way I understand it (also look back at the numbers given for each gear) is that the 2.9 first is like a gear between our stock 1st and 2nd. IF you dont have some good power the 2.9 will be doggy off the line (may enable a better 60ft if you launch at a high enough rpm and have a poweradder or stroker). The 2.9 gear does make the trans a close ratio so the rpm's do not drop as much when you do shift.

I plan to go with an astro super alloy kit. I hear they have a hardend input shaft for the 94/95's now as well.

I was actually considering going withlike a .83ish 5th and going down to a 3.27 but I figured tranny work+rear end work= way too much money. I can spin my 275 rear tires from an idle in 1st (even with the 2.94 ratio) so I figured I could still step it down a bit, but its too much work and money for little gain. Maybe if I had a 9" I would have thought about it.

Good to hear that trans is working out for ya. I'm looking into one myself if I don't end up doing a T56 swap in the future (when I find out what money is). Did you order one complete, or rebuild your T5 with the G-Force gearset? I don't recall reading anything about whether or not you purchased the complete transmission.
