popping during downshift

Ive always wondered what the popping noise is durning downshifts. It originates from the engine but is echo'ed through the exhaust and It usually happens right around 2500-2000 rpm and i really dont like it. what is it?

What kind of exhaust are you running?

It pops due to lack of backpressure.

Isn't it unburned fuel escaping into the pipes and igniting?

stock exhaust except for flowmaster mufflers
