Popular Mechanics says a new Cobra by mid 2005.

Anyone else read the article about the Mustang history in PM this month? Pretty good read. THey talk about all the Mustangs from 64 to 2004. Then they talk about the new Stang, and they mention that a 400+ hp supercharged Cobra will be out by mid 2005. :woot:

Ok you're gonna have to direct me to the article. I didn't see any article in july 2004, there is a 3 page advertisement with pics from 64 to 04 but it doesn't say anything about the new mustangs. There was a pic and brief explanation of the 06 convertible in march 04 but they didn't say anything about HP ratings or the cobra.

I would believe Ford over Popular Mechanics. There is no way that the SVT will be out in 2005. Two words: Power Lease. Ford created the Power Lease for SVT products when the 2004 sales started to slump. Primary response from people cancelling SVT orders was, "Waiting for the next generation." To sweeten the lease, Ford gives the lessee priority positioning on the next generation SVT. These leases are short term and the term is flexible; plus or minus 3 months to coincide with the next SVT launch. Ford has announced production dates. And, they are now contractually obligated to supply people with a next generation SVT or equivelent. It's in the lease contract.

So, Sorry. The SVT's WILL be out in 2006 as a 2007 Model year. I wish it wasn't so, but....

Sorry, Cobra will NOT be out until summer 2006 as a 2007MY. Period. PM is wrong, no ifs ands or buts.

Right but this is not the first time I have heard that they are going to show a cobra in 05 to keep the cobra owners interested.

They may show a cobra in 05. But they will not be building them in 05.

BUT did they say it would be on sale by then or debuted by then? More than likely they said the cobra would be debuted by then which i would say is very likely.

Look back at PM and you will find MANY future car info they published that turned out to be not correct.

Ford has made rumblings about a SE that WILL be out in the spring of 05. PM probably assumed that this will be the Cobra, but we know better.

Even with the language in the PowerLease, there is no reason Ford couldn't change the date significantly (although I agree that it is *very* unlikely). They would still have to give all the lease holders first pick of the new Cobra, and it just means Ford would take an even bigger bath on the leased cars. It really doesn't hurt the leasees much if any.

True, they could significantly change manufacturing dates. If it were earlier, Ford would have to let you out of the PowerLease early with no penalty. If longer, they would have to extend the lease with no penalty and possibly offfer an even cheaper price per month. You are, after all, essentiallly releasing a used vehicle. I actually bought an 04 Cobra about 5 weeks ago and after they changed the computer 3 times due to electrical problems, the dealer converted me into a PowerLease. Sad to say, I'm still having electrical problems and they can't find the source.

Having said that, I made sure the PowerLease was in my best interests.

Absolutely. With a problem like that i would have made them get me another car, lease or not. Who the hell wants to be on the highway at 3am and have the computer take a crap? Not me.

I don't remember reading that C/D said it would be out. They only said that Ford will be focusing on making the Cobra more into a BMW M5 killer instead. I don't remember them saying it would be out only that it was in the future. I'll check that issue since im a subscriber.
Basically i see Ford's plan like this:

Cobra (36K) = M5 (76K)
GT (26K = M3 (56K)

I can see as this current model grows over the years they will upgrade the GT to come near the M3 in ride and quality (it would be faster if there was any competition) and keep the price mid-high 20k's. The Cobra will move into the M5 area. Although the M5 is a sedan it still has a 394Hp V8 Engine and is pretty quick. Basically i can see the Cobra getting an awesome upgrade in interior quality to go along with its awesome engine performance. This is just C/D's point of view, which i think is decent. I just hope Ford doesn't increase the Cobra out of everyones price range.

Cobra is going to be competing with the M3 not M5............... M3 is the fastest and best handling BMW that there is

I didn't ask for another car because it's a mystichrome convertible; hard to find. I know the dealer for over a decade, so I am not overly concerned, I know he will do right by me. He did right on the deal to begin with. And, as far as the reliability goes, well, I'm a tad concerned, but it's a weekend only car. Still though, I wish they would just find the problem. Weird stuff still happens. For example, as I am driving, all of my gauge needles will pin to the max position and slowly come back to normal. Ugh! I hope the 05 is better...

No the 05 is currently rated at 300hp. There is no 05 cobra. The only vehicle in 05 that will have around 500 hp from Ford is the Ford GT.

I believe he's referring the '05 BMW M5. It's rated at 500HP.

Thats exactly right. I've read in an article somewhere that the Cobra could possibly be revealed at an autoshow sometime next summer but i'm not sure how true that is.
