Ported Eaton

I went for a ride in a friend of mines car a few days ago. He's got an 03 just like mine. His exhaust aren't quite as loud as mine, but they're still pretty loud. I noticed though that his blower is much louder than mine. We both have the factory eaton supercharger. The only difference is his is stage IV ported by stiegemeier and mine is not. His also has the stock pulley and mine has a 2.93.

Here's my question: Does porting the factory eaton make it that much louder than a non ported eaton? Maybe its just me, but his car actually feels quicker than mine to. But that's from the passenger seat (wouldn't let me drive it  ) but then again, I wouldn't let him drive mine either :nono:

Yes. The porting significantly opens up the air passages thus allowing more of the sound from the spinning rotors to escape. The type or style of your CAI can also affect the volume of blower whine you hear.

You say your friend is running a stock upper? Is he running a stock lower too?

Ok thanks U.M. And yes, he is still running both a stock upper and stock lower pullies. He's running a JLT rai and a full bassani exhaust with a catted x-pipe. He had it tuned on a dyno with a SCT x-cal 2. Not sure as to his numbers, but it is very impressive for a non-pullied cobra.

It is beyond me why he would go through the trouble of porting the old Heaton'
and still run the stock pullies.......Waste of money IMO. Tell him to spin that thing!
I hear this same thing from many a Terminator owner and it does have a ring of truth to it. Let me tell you why a few of us would want to port the blower and then leave it at the stock boost level...

Personally I've always wanted to extract the maximum amount of HP/TQ from my engine without having to resort to over-spinning the blower. Additional boost equals additional stress on the engine. Ford designed this motor to run for 100K miles or more on 8psi of boost. If you can get more HP/TQ out of the motor without having to increase boost this makes the whole package more efficient and will promote engine longevity. This is kind of the approach I've been striving for since buying my '03 almost 5 years ago. The only reason why I haven't jumped on the porting bandwagon is because of the lack of data on ported Eaton's running at stock boost levels. I know Stiegemeier has a dyno sheet or two showing the gains from porting only on a stock Terminator, but I'm not going to base my decision solely on one or two sets of data from the company who's trying to sell the service to begin with. Plus I've spoke to more than a few of the tuners out there who tell me there will be a loss of torque if I port the Eaton and then decide to NOT spin it harder.

I'm all for lots of power... but I also want to minimize the stress on my motor. If it wasn't for fear of a loss in torque I'd have been ported long ago.

I've seen the same results with the TQ loss after porting. To each his own I guess when it comes to upping the boost. I never expected this motor to last me 100,000 miles. I will be happy and suprised if it will last to 45,000 or 50,000 (just rolled over 9000 here). Even with the safe tune I am running now, the clearances in the motor are just too tight to live forever with anything more then stock boost.

I certainly agree anytime you increase power you induce more stress on the powertrain. That being said there are pullied guy's with 50,60 even 80+K miles without issue. I don't think that just because you up the boost a little you are asking for premature engine failure. It is my opinion that what matters most is how it's driven. I am close to 500 RWHP, and I have my fun with it, just not every redlight, or at the track every week, and no top end runs. I fully expect long life from my motor.

John, I have to agree about the port with a stock pully...I have not seen enough data to support doing it.

Well, your wait is over guys. All I have is numbers right now, no dyno graph to show you, but I'm working on that. Just talked to him and he says when he had his car dyno'd last time (about 6 months ago) it was 442.3rwhp and 419.6 tq. He is looking for the dyno sheets so we can post one up. Not sure what kind of power you are making Uncle Meat, but I assume it's somewhere in the 425 range?

Oh, and about how long a pullied motor will last... Mine has 58,xxx miles on it right now. The guy who previously owned it used it for a daily driver. He told me he installed the pulley at 11,xxx miles. Now, I can't tell you how he drove the car, but it was very clean when I got it, so I'd say he took care of it. I don't drive it daily and I don't lay into it at every stop light and everytime a neon passes me, but I do OCCASIONALLY do I pretty good 2nd to 3rd to 4th gear romp. Not sure how long it'll last, but I'm expecting it'll hold up for a while (at least until I go TT, and then only time will tell...)

So, Uncle Meat, you're making 440hp with a stock pullied, non ported blower? That's amazing. I've got a 2.93 and I'm not making much more power than you are. What else are you running?

Full exhaust (JBA shorty headers, Magnaflow catted X-pipe, and a Magnaflow cat-back). I also run a K&N FIPK CAI. That's it for power mods. The real performance mod is my tune.... James & Ed at RWTD truly know their stuff!!!!

What've you got in mind for future mods, UM? I keep wanting to go TT but with my 460hp I don't get any traction, not sure what I'd do with over 750-800hp. I also haven't been able to bring myself to pulling the thing apart. Lately, I've been thinking that it runs so good now, why mess with it? Would like a little more power, just not sure WHY???
How much HP do you think your JBA's were worth? I've got a MAC o/r x-pipe on mine right now with a Borla Stinger catback, and I'm not at all impressed with the mac pipe at all. The borla's are nice, but the mac seems to be lacking a little on the quality side.

As far as future mods... I don't know. My original factory extended warranty expires in August of this year and I've always said I was going to wait until then before performing any mods which might jepordize it. I've tossed around the ported blower idea many times, but I've yet to commit to anything at this point. I'm actually pretty happy with my current power level. It's more than I can use now.

Peak horsepower gains from the JBA's were minimal at best, it was the added power I made under the curve which stuck out. I gained 12RWHP in the midrange.

I'm surprised you're not happy with the MAC? For all out power and a nastly loud sound the MAC Pro-Chamber is rated as one of the best.
