Got the other side all pulled off. All the oil leaks look to be the valve covers.

What is this bolt?! I know practically every damn bolt on this car. But I don't know what this is doing.

Passenger side about 2" above the oil pan.

On my 83 that bolt holds my battery cable on the way to the starter.. About halfway on the cable the bracket goes there..

I want to say it is a smog pump bracket bolt? Going off memory here as neither of my cars use it for that. It has been repurposed for the chassis to block ground.

Engine front rebuild going to commence. Water pump, timing chain cover reseal, new balancer, new pulleys, tensioner, PS pump, 3G alternator. I don't want to have to do this again.

If you are going to pull the timing chain cover why not pop a new double roller timing chain in there?

No worries. Was just thinking oil pump and pickup tube but at some point you just have to call it good and send it.

Timing chain was a good call. There's definitely some slop in this one. On the upside, as I tore into it there is zero evidence of head gasket issues. All the coolant was perfectly green aside from some sediment at the bottom of the radiator.

Also, good thing I pulled it all off. Found that one water pump bolt was completely missing and another didn't have any threads on it. Good thing timing covers are cheap.

. I just realized that one of the water pump bolts is broken off in the block. There's enough sticking out to weld a nut to and get a torch to see if I can remove it.

Drove a nut on. Gonna pick up the welder from my buddies this weekend and see if I can get that bitch out. I figure to weld the nut on, heat the side of the block where the threads are with a torch and go nice and slow.

I remember something being wrong the last time I changed the water pump. I guess that was it.

Why we don't buy grade-5 bolts from the hardware store to attach to the engine block for $100, please.

You're not wrong. But this one was one of the OE bolts that I reused. Wish me luck.

I figure if the welding thing doesn't work, you can use the bad timing cover as a jig for a carbide drill bit.
