problem with a built motor

ok,, car is a 347 with H/C/I bunch of bolt ons,, etc..

has a ron davis radiator, victor water pump, 160* stat
Car also has under drive pulleys..

when car is idling, or in traffic on a hot day.... the temp creeps up, slowly but surely.... when driving it drops down....

im thinking its because of the u/d pulleys and the stock clutch fan not pulling enough air across the radiator and the underdrive pulleys not giving enough flow..

what do you guys think,, this normal?

This strictly my opinion, but I think a 160 degree thermostat is too low. I would throw a 180 in. It seems like the thermostat would always stay open and never get a chance to close. JMO...

i got rid of my under drive pulleys cause of the same problem, didn't provide enough charge for battery and car ran a little hotter. another thing is your stock fan clutch can be on its way out.

yea thats what ive been hearing,, that the 160* stat, doesnt allow the water to cool in the radiator for enough time...

Yep, I would throw a 180 in it. When you are sitting in traffic, that thing is staying open and when you are driving it is probably doing the same thing, but it is pulling more air and actually cooling.

It's any easy $10.00 fix.

i got a 180 and my car does that too
runs real cold like 150-160 on highway moving along
and idlein around town it will creep up to 180-190-200
its all about the aluminum 3 core radiator i got from summit cools so good with a little wind
only thing we can do is get powerful electric fan thats on during traffic etc and off during driving

I hate my underdrive pulleys, never enough charge... always heats up when im in traffic. It sure as hell doesn't do good at the track. When I get my 3G alternator, im ditching the alternator pulley. But I am hoping the alumminum radiator/electric fan will help with the cooling.

Mine was doing the same thing with a stock engine. I put in a brass 3-row rad., same thing kept happening. I put in a taurus elec. fan and it stopped the heating up at idle, even with AC running in the FL heat. The underdrives are not helping matters for sure.

One more thing, if you are changing the stat, spend a few extra bucks and get the Mr. Gasket performance 180* stat.

f you are going to keep the UD pullies, replace the alt one with the stock one. That will eliminate any charging problems. You may need to change your belt, I am not too sure though.
