Hey guys I need advice about my steering column. There is up/down side/side play in the steering wheel. I double checked the wheel is tight and not moving, the 4 nuts mounting the steering column itself are tight, the rag joint is brand new, new rack. I have the feeling this 170K+ mile steering column is worn out. Maybe one of the bearings is shot? I called around to the part places and they dont carry them. Does anyone sell a rebuild kit?

thanks,

Drew

p.s its on an 85 coupe

Take all the plastic covers off from around the steering wheel. Remove the multifunction switch. There will be 2 7/16 bolts.....they will be as loose as a 10cent whore. Take them out, add some thread lock and put them back in tight! That will take care of the play!

I found those (behind multi switch) and they were NOT loose. I took them out, put some locker on them and threw them back in. The up/down movement can clearly be seen in the front bearing with the shroud off.

the steering columns are a pita to take apart. Nobody seems to sell a bearing kit for them so I guess I can always try the bone yards. Are the steering columns from 79-93 all the same? I know the multifunction switch and stuff is dif but if I found a low mile from from a 92 (for ex) I assume I could NOT make it work...
