Problem with throttle sticking

This weekend took the 2001 3.8 w/ 34k to my home town and in the 2hr trip the throttle stuck about 1 1/2 hrs in the trip. When in neutral at a stop lights it would rev up to 3k. Made it home and let it set a while and its was fine. Tonight I cleaned the throttle body and drove it a little, seemed fine. I dont normally drive this car, the lady does, so I dont really know whats normal for it.

Only had the car about 1000k, and I normally drive a Jeep 5 speed. When I drive this car (which is only in the evenings) the throttle doesnt drop very fast when shifting the manual 5 speed like my jeep does, is this normal for the 3.8?

Sounds like you have the typical Ford IAC (idle air control) valve problem, which is solved by replacing it.
Stop by Autozone and have your codes scanned to make sure you don't have anything else wrong that would cause it--it's likely the IAC.

Anyone want to inform me where the idle air control is located? Its not the sensor in the air tube right after the air filter? I think this sensor is the mass air flow meter? I'm kinda new to EFI, if you cant tell.

One of your sixer pals may have to help out, as I only know where it is on the 4.6 2valve.

Here is where it is on the 4.6:

It is not the black piece the arrows are pointing to (this photo is from bullittarchive.com)--it's the metal piece bolted onto the manifold, right after the black box and vacuum line. Hope this gives you some idea.

I would still get your codes pulled first, though.

I had a similiar problem and cleaning the IAC resolved it (http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=580646).

Later today I'll take some pictures to help you locate it. It is a very simple procedure to clean or replace, there are just 2 bolt to be removed and it pops out and pops back in.
