Like 6 mouths ago i took my 302 block out of my mustang to rebuild it. well its rebuild now and i need to put it back in.. :nonono: i forgot how the dam thing gose back in tranny is still in there. I am having problems putting the tranny on the engine anyone know how i can make this easier. should i pull the tranny out and bolt it up then put it back in???
and also i think the body moved apart alittle the motor mounts dont match up anymore i have to force them togetter? how do i fix this?:notnice:

My personal opinion is that it's easier to mount the transmission to the engine and drop them both in together.

If you have an auto transmission, be sure to put the torque converter on the transmission before mating the transmission to the engine

yea thats the problem the tranny is sitting there with the torque converter in it and i cant get the enigne to fit back in the bolts that come out from the torque converter are not goning into there slots on the flywheel? is there a easier way to do this?

easeist way to do it is to remove your transmission. The bolts on the TC and the holes on the flexplate have a very tight tolerance. They have to be damn near perfectly aligned for them to mate up. I dont know about the motor mounts.

well i tryed to put the bolts to line up and i tightend the bolts on the bellhouseing tot he engine then tryed to push the flexplate around o get it to pop in but still no good but it did turn.. i will take the tranny out when i get home its still bolted up to the engine so it would be easy.. hopfully i can get it in there.

Ps. I am doing everthing bye myself its hard work but i got it out lol...

Now you've got a 50/50 chance you've broken the front pump gear by how you bolted the two together.:nono: You cannot force the two together this way without cracking the front pump gear. Best way to align the two with one in the car is to take 4 long early small block ( 289/302) head bolts, remove the heads, then chamfer the (head) ends, to make studs out of the bolts. Also helps to cut a slot into the ends to facilitate removal. Screw these into the bellhousing pattern on the block, then lower the engine into place. Before doing anything else, make sure the torque converter is seated all the way into the front pump of the transmission, when it is, it will be deeper than the bellhousing face and the studs of the converter will just slightly reach the flexplate when the engine's in place.Align the studs you've now got into the corrosponding holes in the bellhousing, push the engine onto the bellhousing. Align the torque converter studs with the holes in the flexplate. Push the two all the way together. install the two bellhousing bolts into the holes that don't have studs. Bolt the flexplate to the converter. Remove the studs you installed and install the bell bolts. For your sake, I hope you didn't crack the front pump gear. I just watched the show where Jesse James went to Iraq to build a wheelie Hummer. They got it all finished but also cracked the pump gear on the Powerglide transmission, for which there was no replacement for in Iraq. :notnice:

front pump gear?? sorry i am new to this...
well i thought it would be bad so i didnt force it in I took it back out then tryed agian witht the bell houseing on theflexplate and the engine bolted up, me and a friend lifted the tranny back in to place and it fit perfectly back into its spot, now all i need is tranny fluid then i could see if i broke anything :(
i am going to try and push it down the street in nutral to see if it dosent make any werid noises...:bang:

Am I reading this correct? Did you have the torque converter bolted on to the flexplate, the bellhousing bolted to the motor, and then slid the input shaft into the torque converter and bolted the tranny to the bellhousing? If so then you better take it apart.

Leave the tranny and bellhousing bolted together. Put the torque converter over the input shaft and rotate it back and forth several times to engage it on the pump. It will engage in two or three times before it is seated in properly.

Then line up the torque converter studs with the flexplate making sure that the drain plug on the converter lines up with the access hole in the flexplate.

Bolt the bellhousing to the engine, then put the nuts on the torque converter.

You won't hear any noises from a broken pump gear. It just won't go anywhere when you slip it into gear.:notnice: The best way to know if you did break it, is to pulll the two apart and unbolt the front pump housing and look and see if you broke the gear. That's provided you don't have it all together already. In that case, fire it up, slip it into gear and pray it takes off and operates like it should.

Take the tranny off and try to turn it over. If the convertor is jambed on incorrectly you most likely will not be able to turn it by hand. I will state again, put the convertor on the tranny first when reassembling. Follow the procedure I wrote above. I have never incorrectly assembled an engine/automatic combo. I was taught how to do it correctly with my first truck when I was 16 and have never tried to cheat and do it a different way on the countless motor installs I've done the seventeen years that have since past.

Yep, I did this same thing six months ago and it was very tough. You gonna have to rotate the crank until the holes on the flywheel match the bolts on the torque converter. It took me an entire weekend because of all the up and down from under the car to the crank. Make sure the block is "square" to the tranny!

It would be a little easier with a second person to help with the project and the necessary beer runs.

Good Luck!
