problems starting please help

i have a 1990 mustang lx 2.3 l and i cant seem to get it started the lights inside come on but when i turn the key it makes a like clicking sound i just bought a new solenoid but it has a positive a negitive and an and two other connections which i only need one it says to hook it up to s and i can be unused

any dianostics ???

there shouldnt be any extra wires on the selinoid, they are all used, Could be your starter is out though.

on my car when i was having problems with it there should only be 2 black wires on the neg side of the solenoid and there in the same wire loom, the rest go on the pos side of the solenoid.
 
Some solenoids have two large posts and two small posts. The one large post is for the starter cable and the other, the + battery cable. One small post is for the 'TART' circuit from the ignition switch and the other small post is for older (pre-electronic) ignition systems that had to supply more voltage to the coil than was allowed by the IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE WIRE. The gnition bypass wire would go there. You don't need it because your engine is EFI. Check your battery and ALL connections.
