I understand how much tire i can fit with a mini...i guess my main question is whats the disadvantage of a full tub? I currently run a 295 on 18x10s with stock tubs...i plan to go with a larger set of tires and lower the car more. Im doing a completely custom setup and i just cant find much info about full tubs
I see it this way then. If you don't back half the car, you'll end up cutting up the tub kit so bad to get them to fit the stock frame rails, there'll be little benefit to increasing the size. All of the full tub kits out there like S&W, C/E, Alston, are like 36" in diameter.
To me, the only benefit you'll gain with a real set of drag race tubs is that they are big enough to allow a 29.5"X 295/305 drag radial to fit w/o crashing into anything if it is your intention to put the tire completely under the car. And if that is the goal, then frame rails have to be fabbed, shocks relocated, rear end narrowed,...blah,blah,blah.
The black and white car in my screen name had a custom mini-tub. I cut the wheel tub at the pinch weld, and left just enough margin to rivet the inner two piece tub to what was left. I made a cardboard template of my intended inner tub, and taped the two pieces together, then trimmed them till I got what I wanted. Once there, I took the two pieces to a HVAC tin shop, and had them roll two edges with the Pittsburg lock so I could put the tub together once I got it home.
Worked and looked just like a full set of drag race tubs w/o all the fitment issues against the inner side of the quarter a complete set will require.
