I'm in the process of installing vt stage 2 blower cams on my 00 4.6 2v. I followed everything according to this post...

http://phatdoggy.home.comcast.net/sohc_timing.htm

... I did the passenger side first just to check for ptv clearances (used playdoh), rotated the engine, and everything checked out fine. The closest was like .400 thousands. Took that chain and head off. Time to check the driver's side, rotated the engine. Big problem with #6. The valves hit the pistons (barely) but 5, 7, and 8 were totally fine. There was a little nick in the piston. Tried it again and used a c-clamp on the chain (no oil in tensior, motor out of the car) and it came to .060 thousands, which is pretty close. The intake and exhaust valves were both that close.

I don't understand that all cyclinders except #6 were completely fine. I am using manley springs with vt stage 2 blower cams.

Could a cam be off?
Would there be more clearance when oil is in the heads and tensioners?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cam could be off, pull it and check relative to other valves. Also could have a bent/mis-machined valve.

Good luck!

any recommendations as far as...

-notching?
-manley valves? (thinner than stock)
-thicker head gasket (heard not to do this)

stupid question--cams on the correct side? have not heard anyone with ptv problems with stage 2's,stage 3's can be installed without ptv issues. how far below deck is #6 compared to rest?

cams are definitely on the correct sides. The right side is the passenger and the left side is the drivers, as if you are sitting in the drivers seat. I called VT to make sure.

I'll have to check how far below deck is #6

What is curious to me, is, if #6 intake hit, wouldn't all the intake valves hit? not just that one?

Not if it's a problem with the bottom end hardware, and not timing/excess valve lift.

Like the cam isn't cut right, so that lobe is bad. Like there is too much lift pushing the valve in too deep.

so that happens sometimes? companies will accidently cut the cam wrong?... that could be the cause in my case.
