Pulled codes and got a 676 - transmission in malfunctioning in 1st gear and reverse. As sad as it is considering that I bought this car not too long ago, I was wondering what the next step would be. Thanks.

I just looked in my haynes manual, chiltons manual. and the book for my code scanner. None show a code 676.

From your name I assume you have an '86. If so you are looking for 2 digit codes not 3 digit. Three digit codes didn't come along until 1991. Maybe you are used to three digit codes and are linking half of one code with another. I did that the first time I scanned my '93 as I was only used to two digit codes the three digits had me confused at first untill I looked in my manual and learned that '91 up have 3 digits '90 down have 2 digits. Also on an '86 mustang the only trannys availiable were the T-5 and the AOD neither of which are electronic. So basically there ARE NO transmission codes for fox body mustangs at all, except for the neutral safety switch failure which is a code 67.
And one last thing Bryan was trying to help you no need to get rude with him man. We all try to get along around here, welcome to the site and I hope this helps your figure out why your are getting a code that doesn't exist.

well heres the thing...there was a 6 then a 7 then a six without pause...i looked it up in the book from the actron code scanner that i have and 676 says what ive posted previosuly. im just wondering what to do about the problem...i dont wanna argue about whether the code exists or not. Anyways, I can shift into reverse unless I put my car in second or it grinds horribly, and when i let off the gas in first it brakes so much my head flies forward. Obviously the problem matches the code i scanned, looked up, and posted here. If you want to offer help, not argue about the code which is completely irrelevant, I would appreciate it.

ok you cant shift into reverse without going into 1,3,or 5th first... this is because there is no syncro for reverse in a t5 tranny... I did hear that you can do that in a tremec tho

and what do you expect to happen once you let off the gas in 1st gear??? its gonna buck forwards

Just what The Shape said... There IS NO code 676.. it will be a 2 digit code and a 2 digit code only.. I also have the actron scanner that i sold to a friend.. I couldnt find that anywhere.. it will be a 2 digit code

What i would do first is disconnect the battery for 20 mintues so that the computer resets itself and then redo it.. If it has anything to do with the ac and you dont have it, ya migh as well just ignore the code.. I dont have ac either, but i never got a code 67... sorry i couldnt help more!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but... as stated by FiveLite, "there is no synco for the reverse gear". After years of forcing the trans into reverse without first slowing the trans/reverse countershaft by putting it into a forward gear, the two mating gears are severely worn to the point that they no longer engage. These parts will need to be replaced=remove transmission. For now, you may be able to use reverse by selecting it while the engine is off. If it's really bad and this stategy is hit or miss, try rolling the car a few inches while trying to engage reverse. Good Luck!

Not trying to argue at all. I already KNOW the code doesn't exist. Just trying to help you out brother.

what about your clutch cable? Your cable can and will stretch over time and it may become increasingly harder to engage 1st 2nd and reverse. However like the others have said theres no syncro on reverse and most people actually will throw it up into 1st or 2nd before they try to get it in reverse. As for the immediate slowing down thing in first, its natural/normal to an extent but if your truly worried about it you can check your tps settings/voltage and then run some carb/choke cleaner through your tb and IAC and that might help you out a little. goodluck

Code 67 - clutch not depressed (5 speed) or car not in neutral or park (auto) or A/C in On position when codes where dumped. Possible neutral safety switch or wiring problem. You can generally ignore this code, since it has no effect on engine performance.

Just want to add this... You could snap that T-5 in half and the computer would know nothing about it.

In otherwords the computer doesnt have a clue that you grind the gears when putting in reverse.
