Push button start on a fox? Whats ur thoughts?

Ive seen it done on a lot of s197s and I just saw one done on a fox and it got me thinkin, thats different! I kinda liked it, nice modern touch. Wondering why they dont sell a kit in a fox, I wouldnt think it would be all that hard, but Ive been wrong before.

Idk, its a neat idea i guess, just dont see it working with the fox crowd. Plus a lot of those systems require a "smart" key that has to be within a certain distance of the sensor for the push button to work. Drove a nissan for a bit where i just had to have the keys in my pocket for it to start. Dont see that working so well with a set of junk old ford keys

Stupid, and also more hassle than it's worth. The car i traded years ago for my coupe had a push button ignition and it was such a PITA. Maybe it was just the way the previous owner had it installed...i dunno. You still have to use the key to switch it to the run position, why not just leave well enough alone and turn the key? If it ain't broke don't fix it.

There are true push button systems, but the price is outrageous. $800-1000.

The cheaper ones you see in s197s still require you to use the key. You put key in, turn to on, then push the button. That's not how the system is supposed to work.

Yeah, this is the way I see you having to jerry rig a fox to get the same result. I have thought of it a few times for myself, but the fact that I'd still be inserting the key and turning it to unlock the column, then after all of that,.. reach for a button instead of just turning the key another 20 degrees.

True smart key setups ate pretty sweet though. I have the system on my g35 and it's great to never have to take a key out to start car, unlock door, or open trunk.

Downside is these systems on aftermarket form are maybe 25%-50% of the cost of the vehicle they are usually installed in

I went the other way with the idea & have a push start & toggles to run everything. I have a Master Power switch that turns on relays that control the ignition box, boost controller, meth injection, gauges & EEC. I have a switch that turns on the fuel & turbo oil return pump. A switch to turn on the lights. A switch to turn on the wipers. A 2 way switch to work the turn signals. A switch to kill power to the fan & alt at the track. If my car still had a heater, I would have a toggle for that too. Some of the guys I know say Im 1 toggle away from needing a pilots license to drive my car lol. yes its a wiring nightmare and I would agree that in most cases, if its not broke, dont fix it. I no longer have a steering column with a key switch or multifunction switch. Its just a shaft with a steering wheel on it. I only need a key to open the doors & hatch.

Well then isn't your car a pure track car? I've had race car panels (in race cars) but are you saying the you have this setup in a street driver?

Has anybody asked how you like that rear mounted turbo? How it performs VS an engine mounted unit? Is it a kit, or something you fabbed? So as not to jack the thread, PM me w/ the answers if you will.

I was talking to a friend of mine today about this same thing. I'd like to do it to my car (why not? Changed everything else...). I would do an RFID transmitting keyfob, and a receiver that will allow 1 button start.

Get in the car, press and hold the start button to start the car (with the clutch in of course, possibly the brake). To turn off, press again. To turn on the ignition, press the button with the clutch not pressed. Get to far away, system is not active, and if the car is running, will shut off on it's own...


I have a pretty heavy electronics backround, I think I could do it.

If you have to turn the key anyway to the on posistion, whats the freakin point? I dunno, Im kinda on the fence with this one. Usuallly I either love or hate a mod, this one Im not quite sure. Def wouldnt do it soon anyway. I need some fuel upgrades first.

Wait, I don't get it... My car usually just starts when I turn the key anyway. Is there a true benefit to this whatsoever?

Well if it was a system that you just get in the car and push the button to start it, it is kind of nice. However, the system like the Honda S2000 where you have to turn the key and then push a button, it's just retarded. Either way it's just a waste of money. In all honesty if I were to put something "modern" on my car it would be a backup camera, might save you a bumper cover, tail light, cat, child, and other minor things. My buddy actually put a camera and a screen on his vehicles and took the rear view mirror off.
