puzzling clutch cable

If someone could help me out with this one. If I drive up to the store and back, everything is pretty normal, but when i get on the freeway I exit about 10 miles later I can barely get the car in gear and I have to pull over and adjust the clutch cable, pretty soon I'm not going to have any adjustment left on it. The cable is less than a year old and I replaced the quadrant with a aluminum one, I also bought the fenderwall adjuster for it too.

Can somebody help me please?

It's probably stretching, cheapy replacement cables tend to do this. Get a OE Ford one. After I did made a world of difference.

There is a place selling them for $40 includes a new clutch fork too. Can't remember who it is though, I'm sure someone will chime in.

MM has them pretty cheap or www.buyfordracing.com i think has them for 40 bucks

Make sure you have a good brand cable. As all these guys will say...cheap ones just don't last. They will stretch, bind or all of a sudden get stiff or break. Also how old is the clutch?

Ford OEM is suppose to be the strongest. Maximum Motorsports did a writeup on it so check out their website.

thanks guys... hey notchback I just replaced the clutch and I've been having the same problem berfore the install.


I just figured BBK was a pretty reliable source...is that considered a cheap cable?

I just got a BBK also. I'm not trying to steal your thread or anything but I was about to post about a clutch cable thread and figured I would just add on. A friend and I just put a used trans in with about 80,000 miles to replace my original (186,000). I figured the old trans was bad because my syncros were going and it was getting harder and harder to get it into gear. The newer trans has no problems (so the guy said and I believe him). So I got this used trans for now, my friend help me put it in, and still the same problem. So he said I need a new clutch cable. I bought the BBK from summit and now my friend has dissappeared. So, from reading the replies from above, it sounds like I definately need this new cable. Now, I need to install it. How hard is it exactly. Or better yet, if someone has the time to just give me a quick direction or two. Also, I didn't get the firewall adjuster. Should I have? Anything would help a great deal. My poor stang has been sitting for almsot two months now and its killing me. I can't take it to a shop because I would't be able to make it there, unless I keep it in the same gear the whole way. Again, thanks for your help.

the cable is very simple you just disconnect it from the quadrant under the dash br the steering wheel(you have to rotate the quadrant toward you to get the cable off) and take the fork cover off, remove the retainer from the cable than slide the cable out from the fork......the tricky thing that I've had problems with from day one is routing the cable in the engine compartment...but it's a 10 min. jobber!

the cable is very simple you just disconnect it from the quadrant under the dash br the steering wheel(you have to rotate the quadrant toward you to get the cable off) and take the fork cover off, remove the retainer from the cable than slide the cable out from the fork......the tricky thing that I've had problems with from day one is routing the cable in the engine compartment...but it's a 10 min. jobber!

As far as routing goes, I disconnected the old cable on both ends, but left it in place. Then I ran the new cable right beside it. Once it was in place I pulled the old one out and connected the new one. Worked like a charm.

I too, finally needed a new clutch cable after 186k on the original one. Go to diversified (buyfordracing.com). they sell the same oem cable that mm does, but much cheaper. MM sells the oem one for I think $59 (although that may have been the universal, I think the oem was even more expensive) where diversified has it for $48 to your door, WITH a new clutch fork. that's the route I went. The new cable is kick ass. ALthough I haven't installed it yet, I can already see how shot my old one was.


also, route your cables exactly like this. Poke it under the engine mount to the clutch fork

Guys, you are truly the best. I am going to order a firewall adjuster and follow that website that v8only gave me. You don't know how happy I will be to see that 5.0 on the road again (well, just imagine that yours wasn't on the road and then I guess you would know exactly how I feel). Thanks again.:SNSign:
