I am currently in the process of swapping motors.I couldnt get the high pressure hose fitting at the pump broke loose with a stubby wrench, so I applied a little heat,I eventually got the fitting broke loose however the line started to leak fluid after applying heat.when I finally got the line removed there was a plastic washer that was mangled, was that the source of the leak? can I get another one?

They are special teflon washers. Get them from Ford. Expect to be $2-3 each.

There is a trick to re-installing them. Heat them in a pan of hot water. Use the taper of a socket extension to slightly strech the washer so that it will clear the threads. After a short while, the washer will return to its original state.

HOWEVER, I would be concerned about the other seals in the PS hose that are NOT serviceable. If you heated it enough to melt the teflon washer, likely that the seal in the flexible hose joint is toast.

The only fix is new PS hoses. New Ford, salvage yard, or Internet. I have found new reasonable priced replacement hoses for my 97 Cougar via Google search. Beats the high prices Ford wants.

Absolutely not compression. There is a washer that seals the nut to the power steering pump. There is also a seal between the hard hose and the nut. Remember that the hard line can rotate within the nut. That is the seal I suspect that you damaged by heating.

darn, guess ill need a new hose,I probably could have gotten it loose with a crows foot without using heat, however my crappy harborfreight crows foot set doesnt come with an 18 MM they skip 18 and go from 17 to 19.
