Question about a K&N Air Charger kit on my Mach 1

I got a Mach 1 yesterday (2004 Azure Blue with 1,700 miles on it) and when I opened the hood I saw it had a K&N air filter sticker on it. I didn't think much of it until I got it home and went to put some stuff in the truck and found a box in it. The box contained the Mach 1's stock air intake system and read K&N Air Charger Off Road Performance Kit. At the bottom of the box it says "For Racing Use Only". Should I be concerned about this? I have the stock setup that I could reinstall in it. Should I do that or leave the K&N Air Charger system in it? Since this thing had a racing air filter in it I have to wonder what he was doing with it... Racing it, perhaps?

Here is a picture of the K&N setup:

And here is a picture of the box that was in the trunk:

I think the K&N will be fine.

Mach1s ROCK! You made an excellent choice my friend.

Let's see some more pics! :D

BTW, was it difficult making the deal? Did you get a good deal? That is a pretty special car...

I got it for about $22,500. They originally wanted $26,000 for it. I told them what I wanted my payment to be and stuck with it. They tried to get me to go higher but I wouldn't budge. Finally they got it down to $7 a month of what I wanted so I took it.

I took a bunch of pictures but I am not happy with the way most of them came out. Bad lighting. The sun was already on the way down when I took them. I'll try again on the weekend. For now, here is the best picture I have of it:

I've got the same K@N CAI. But I'm ditching it tomorrow in favor of the C@L Tru Flo System. I've had stalling problems every since I had the K@N CAI on there. Alot of people are blaming it on the IAC valve or the K@N. Keep an eye on low RPM's at stop lights and near stalling, or stalling when making turns.

Oh God, out of the pan and into the fire - jesus, I'd run from the C&L - now, we have their intake tubes on both our GTs, but the C&L MAFs are sitting on the shelf...hunks of junk.
So, do you think the C&L Tube is gonna chg anything and why - it's only a tube. And secondly, man, if you are going to the C&L MAF, dude, I pray for ya.
EDIT - gotta chg the 01's sig - it HAD the C&L MAF...until I was able to find a OEM MAF donor. :nice:

I know a couple other guys with Mach's that have the C@L and have had no problems with it. When I had my '93 GT, I heard alot of people saying the C@L 73 mm Mass Air Meter was junk and this and that. Never had a problem ever. For every person that disses something, you have other people that praise it. Guess I'll find out.

I had that kit on and I took it right off, it make my Car stall out after hard acceleration many times, and after it stalled on me going 140MPH I ripped the damn thing right out and put the stock intake back in, Idk wtf happened

If you experience stalling problems put the MAF screen back in. That eliminated this problem for a lot of people. I had the K&N Aircharger and occasionally experienced stalling, usually when approaching a stop light after exiting a freeway or when braking relatively hard with the clutch pedal down. I made a custom SS screen to fit the outline of the stock MAF housing, but never used it since I went to a C&L CAI. BTW I use a 85mm C&L MAF housing with the stock MAF components with no performance problems or stalling issues.

Have you put that thing on a dyno lately? Curious where your AFR is now, because, that's all the C&L MAF does...lean. :bang:

Here in Indy our cars don't have to go in for emissions tests, yet. As long as it isn't damaging anything I'll probably leave it in.

Thanks for the links and information, rjstaaf. I had previously looked at their site but wasn't sure if I was looking at the right thing or not.

It was lean with the factory tune but that was corrected with a Predator.
Cool, ok, glad you got it worked out. Out of the box, the C&L will lean your motor out. But then you presumably added fuel with the prediator? I guess I don't understand what the net result ends up being? I mean, I'm not trying to pllay dumb here, and I'm sure you are now getting more more air in, and you've compansated that with the prediator, but have you dyno'd before and after, both power wise and afr wise?
See, from what I've been told, most tuners don't like tuning around the C&L MAF. And that's really what it is - tuning AROUND it. The info the MAF provides is critical. I believe it can be done, but I also have my doubts it can be done properly with a blanket "add fuel" type of "if, then" program.

How is the fitmaent of the shaker tube to the K&N shield on yours? It used to be pretty bad on the first version of the Aircharger, but K&N later came up with a no-cost retro fix.

The fit and alignment seem to be good. I think the website said this was a generation II kit. I guess that means they got the bugs out of it. So far I haven't had and problems with it, like it running too lean, but I haven't been running it hard at all. I've been babying it :D
