Marcus or someone can probably answer this. I just got the original FORD window sticker for my Saleen. It shows it was shipped to NewMexico. The selling dealer on the Saleen invoice is in the Houston, TX area...shows the car was shipped from Saleen straight to them. I had always assumed either Saleen got the cars direct from Ford or the selling dealership, but apparently not. I thought I had read somewhere that the S351 cars were v6 cars and came straight from Ford. How did all this car swapping around take place? Did the selling dealer search out the car a customer wanted from existing inventories at other dealerships?

Most all of the cars come from Galpin Ford at this time.

In 1998 they were coming from Orange Ford. You (or the original buyer) must have requsted something that was not in stock or coming in soon, so they either purchased the car from another dealership or did a DX.

Another example of this would be Chuck's SA-20 #7. He wasted an automatic, but the 10 cars set aside from Saleen were all 5-speed cars, and there were no more from the usual supply due to it being late in the 2003 prodution, thus they had to hunt to find a white vert automatic to build the car from. There was one at a dealership, and it was the last white vert auto 2003 left in CA that ended up becoming his car.

All the cars going to SSV in Troy go to Dean Sellers Ford in Troy before they go to Saleen. My car was ordered from Campbell ford in Niles Mi, was built at AAI in Flatrock then went to Dean Sellers before going to SSV for production. My 06 SC came out of Campbells Inventory of Mustangs and not from the Saleen "pool". I did this because I wanted Shaker 1000 Audio and the Dark Charcoal IUP which Saleen Pool cars do not come with....

Well, mine is a cobra, so maybe they were all special order and not in the regular pipeline. The Ford sticker shows the car went to Richardson Ford Sales in Albuquerque and the Dealer it went to from Saleen was Gullo Ford Mercury in The Woodlands, TX.

Anyway just thought it was odd.

All Saleen Cobras are special order and usually come out of the dealers SVT allocation, if they don't have one available or if the buyer wants a different color then what the dealer has, then the dealer will trade with another SVT dealer to get the right one.

I might be wrong but I think most of the 94 S-351's were V-6 cars! Mike would probably know for sure! Mark

ok,

in 94 all S351's were built from V-6 chassis except two verts.

in 95, ALL were built from V-8 chassis but six cars. two of those were verts. One car was built from a cobra vert. I would like to have that car. My S351 was one of the V-6 cars for that year.

From 96 on ALL S351's were built from V-6 chassis.

This is probably correct as my own Saleen Cobra's SVT window sticker states it was to be delivered to Bob Allen Ford in Overland Park, KS. However, the original selling dealer is listed on the Saleen certification letter as being Bob Sight Ford in Lee's Summit, MO.

As for the early cars, the late 80's and early 90's fox's it went like this.

Each Ford/Saleen dealer would estimate how many Saleen Mustangs they could sell per year. The dealer would order LX mustangs from Ford based on the colors Saleen would build that year. The Mustangs would bypass the dealer and be delivered to Saleen. Since the dealership commited to a certain number of cars and if they didn't sell they would sit. This killed quite a few Ford dealers that carried Saleen back then. In 1990 about half the Ford dealers that carried Saleen the year before stopped. If there was a customer order car the dealer would try to get the car from Ford directly first. If he could not, he would take from his inventory or another dealer trade ( hence the different loactions listed on window stickers and dealers ) which still happens today. The dealers back then did not want to tale LX mustangs from their own inventory as they only got a certain allotment from Ford. That's why they ordered the cars from Ford seperately for the Saleen Mustangs and why quite a few have consecutive vin nums.

Today, the dealers handle things differently.

My 89' LX was supposed to be a Saleen. The window sticker shows sold to Peyton Cramer Ford, delivery to Saleen Autosport Anaheim. It had sterio delete with no antenna. Marcus knows my white stang! I believe mine was returned to the dealer because Peyton had plenty of Saleens on the lot and the LX's were in short supply. Back in 89' The LX model was a hot seller...mass air!!!! IN So Cal it was hard to find one with a 5sp. It took me over 3 months to find a white with grey interior and 5sp. Sticker price $13714.00 with dealer "wanting" mark up $1088.00 BOY I miss those days!!
