I am still in the process of buying my 5.0 it was at a dealer here in lancaster. They were putting it through inspection for me and it passed fine, but when they went to do emissions, it failed, because of a secondary emissions system. Some type of pump they were talking about, or so it sounded like. Anyone of you know what it could be and how much it would cost.

Thermactor Air System or "smog pump".

With a 5.0 Mustang, be prepared to either do your own mechanic work or someone else will own your wallet.

Here's a book that will get you started with how the Ford electronic engine control or "computer" works.

Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control 1988-1993 by Charles Probst :ISBN 0-8376-0301-3.

It's about $20 from Borders.com see http://www.amazon.com/ . Select boo...very good, and I found it to be very helpful.

I live in Mechanicsburg, and just to let you know, you dont' have to pass emissions if you plan on driving the car less than 5k miles a year. Mine is my summer car, so that's what I'm doing, I'm not running cats, I have an O.R. X-Pipe. Just thought I'd let you know that.

Yup do the same thing here. In the event your car is a daily driver then it has been known to have the speedometer cable come undone from the transmission and the miles are not documented on the odometer. Thereby keeping it under 5000 miles and not requiring a sniffer test. Not saying you should do that but I have heard stories.

I just picked up a daily driver and so can finally (after 12 friggin years!) turn my 92 5.0 into a summer car. Inspection is due in April, yeah, yeah, I know april is over with, but do I have to prove that it is a summer ride to avoid emsissions this year? I'm sure it won't pass since last year I was right on the boarder...

To be emission exempt you must have less than 5000 miles since the last date of inspection. If you look at the back of your inspection sticker then it will tell you your mileage. By the way, I grew up in D'town and also went to HS there. Live in Morgantown now. :nice:

Does anyone know the emmissions standards in PA? Preferably, Adams County? Anyone have a site where it might say? I gotta get inspected next month...... and I got no cats or smog equip

PennDOT regulates that stuff. You could just call a garage in your county and ask them about the requirements. I didn't think Adams county required emissions. It was originally just Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg (and surrounding suburbs). Now they are starting branch out.

Yeah, I just looked it up on the PennDOT site and Adams county is one of the 42 counties that don't require emissions testing... however, most vehicles under 11,000lbs will have to undergo a visual check to see if the original equipment is on the car from the factory. I'm wondering how long this has been effective because I passed last June without any problems...

i talked to the dealer who has the 5.0 and he told me the car has to pass the emissions inspection first, and then anytime after that i can claim that i only will drive it for 5000 miles. So i guess i still have to have the pump put on.

Did you buy the car yet? If not, then they have to have it pass both safety and emissions inspection. Where is this dealership? I live in Lancaster and havnt seen a 5.0 for sale for a loong time.
