Question about Tremec shifter

I was going to ask if tremec 3550s come with a shifter, but after a forum search I think I found my answer that they do...if thats wrong correct me.

Now to the question i couldn't find an answer to, is there anything to be gained by replacing it with an aftermarket shifter or is the one that comes with the tremec good? It seems that an aftermarket transmission that includes a shifter would include a good shifter, but everyone with a tremec seems to have different shifters...whats the deal? Also, while i have a thread open, if I should get a different shifter what do you guys like for tremecs? Thanks

Are you talking about the older 3550 or the new Tremec 500 / 600 series? The shifter that came on the older TKO / 3550 wasn't all that great. The new Tremecs come with a much nicer Hurst billet shifter, but it doesn't come with a handle. Also, neither one of them comes with stops. The new Tremec is suppossed to have internal stops, but from what I've gathered, they can benefit from the external stops as well. I put a Pro5.0 on my TKO 600. It feels about the same as the old shifter, but with the added benefit of the external stops. If you want to save some $, Steeda makes an external stop kit that fits on the Hurst shifter. Also, the shifters from the old Tremecs and the newer 500/600 are NOT interchangable.

I have the Steeda Tri-ax on my 3550 and it does make a difference. The stops are a plus, but the location of the handle can be adjusted as well.

I have the older 3550. So the stops are the only benefit? I thought it was supposed to make for better shifting or something. And if stops were all that important you'd think tremec would add them...they are just two screws basically right?
