Question about upgrading to Cobra front brakes...

Hey guys, I'm looking at ordering this kit:

94-04 BRAKE KIT, COBRA FRONT, RED CALIPERS MUSTANG

Would I need a new master brake cylinder with this kit for my car? Thanks in advance.

I would suggest buying this kit and painting them, they are the same exact thing just not red:

I did the same thing except pieced together the parts with slotted discs and LCR teflon wrapped SS lines for $342 shipped all together.

An no, you don't need to replace anything that doesn't come with the kit.

Sounds good... Are there any "weird" tools I'm going to need for the job? I only have normal handtools, nothing crazy. I'm assuming I'll need something to bleed the brakes...

Also, how much brake fluid do our cars call for?

just grab one of the big bottles and that should be good, i just did the same swap CobraRed_96_GT thanks to some suggestions he made i got some rotors from a good company cheap, only i got my calipers used off a cobra and they were red already, really easy sway i think you can use a socket wrench to install it all, i didnt change my master cylinder and it feels and brakes sooooo much better than stock way worth the money

96+ Mustangs don't need a MC change to run the cobra brakes.

1 bottle of fluid is usually good enough. I use valvoline synpower brake fluid

Is bleeding the breaks difficult? Sorry I keep asking that, just never done it before.

bleeding brakes is pretty simple. easist way is to have a buddy sit in the car. then open the bleeder valve and have him push down on the brake pedal all the way to the floor. when pedal is at floor close the bleeder valve. then have him release foot from pedal. do this on all 4 wheels going in this order. RR,LR,RR,LF. do each corner untill no more air bubbles are coming out of the bleeder.

Easiest way is actually to fill a small plastic bottle about 1/4 full of brake fluid - put the vacuum hose (or what ever you're using to guided the fluid down) down submerged in the fluid then open the valve and pump slowly, no air - only fluid will be sucked back up.
As for tool - a line wrench (like an open end wrench except 3/4 closed instead of 1/2) would be best since the fitting is brass and delicate. Also pliers or a flathead wrench to take out the line clip.

X2.. Mine were almost rounded off from the factory..

I bought some "speed bleeders". they made the job pretty easy although I hear of people doing it with a handheld vacuum pump..

When I did mine, I completely flushed the brake lines. Just keep pumping/bleeding/filling until the fluid that comes out is nice and new and bubble-free.

can some one please make a sticky with this!!!!!!!!! If your car is a daily driver (this is a sticky must ) all 99-04 spare tires will NOT NOT fit over the bigger cobra brakes! if you dont care cool , lots of folks say "ill just call for a flatbed towtruck" . Im cool with that , but I spent the bucks and bought the "cobra spare" and tire for my dd. Color is up to you, they do make the rears look a little (a lot ) wimpy!! Stoping power I think they lock up just as easy as stockers. O.K. maybe a little less fade when your realy realy testing your skills

I painted mine red and think they look ok

big bottle of brake fluid.
I opened the bleeder about a dozen times on each side to make sure there was no more air I had my helper push the brake peddal slowly to the floor and let me know when they reached the floor then I would tighten the bleeder and tell them it was ok to release the brake and repeat the process.

1. Jack up rear of car.
2. Put spare on rear - take rear off.
3. Jack up front of car.
4. Take off flat tire, put on rear's full size.
5. make sure you dont drive too long on the spare with it on the rear.

Ford 500 taurus have 13" brakes and may have a 5-lug spare that might fit.

Cheaper than buying a Cobra spare

if your rotors have not come off in a while, you will need to spray down with PB Blaster and then get a big rubber or metal mallet to pound them off from the back. Not real hard, but the heavy weight of the mallet will help them along. One of mine took some time to get it to break free.
