Question on vibration in the trans?

Dale (I think his name is fast94gt) or something like that recently had some vibe problems and he said once he changed the flywheel out and had it balanced to the pressure plate the vibe was gone.

I say with the money you will spend getting it balanced you can do what I did and just buy a new stock flywheel for $100 bucks from summit or jegs...

Guys, I'm experiencing a bit of trouble with a vibration, too. My tranny guy, who is extremely competent and credible, told me that tranny vibrations are very rare. It's apparently much more likely that your pressure plate, balancer, flywheel, driveshaft, u-joints, tire balance, axle bearings, etc.. could be the culprit of a vibration.

You can rule out anything in or behind the transmission if you still have a vibration with the clutch pedal depressed and the transmission in gear. Likewise, you can rule out anything from the input shaft and bearings forward with the car in neutral at speed. I realize that most of you know this, but I'm just putting it out there.

TTT. Anyone heard of balancing a flywheel. I havent. How much does it cost?

Pretty rare but according to a few threads (including my own experience!) it can happen. A local high-end engine builder charged me 125 CDN. With almost 500 ft/lbs at the flywheel, I considered it cheap insurance as I was getting a noticeable vibration before. :D

Hey bluethunder1988, how noticable was the vibration. Im having killer vibration in the shifter but when the hood is popped and I rev the motor in neutral it doesn't look anything out of the ordinary.

And to others that know more about this than me. Last time you had your flywheel resurfaced did they balance it also.

Numbles...when I had my flywheel resurfaced I didn't have them balance it with anything. I dropped it off (took out the dowel pins) and had them take it and I picked it up later that afternoon...no problems.

I have a vibe in 3rd gear when I get up there in the rpms...the others don't seem to do that...

It wasn't all that noticable in the shifter--you could just 'feel' it through the pedals, etc. What the machine shop said about my flywheel and pressure plate assemble was that each was a tiny bit off balance and when put together in a way where the two imbalances added up = vibration. They dynamically balanced the assembly and marked it so I could bolt it up the same way it was balanced. Good luck!

That's a pretty kewl deal. What did they use to do that? I mean... what machine did they mount it to, to determine the balance?
