hey all

had some questions for ya. ill try not to ramble too much, but heres some background that i feel is important. I have a 93 5.0 LX and its great. I bought a 99 explorer engine from the jy for $350 - oilpan to throttle body, complete! the block is cracked though lol. I need my car to pass emissions and get stock gas mileage, so ive decided to stay with the stock HO cam. I have my cougar for the recreational weekend warrior machine, so having the stock cam in my dd 5.0 is fine. Also, the fox has 110k miles on it. I have no idea how many miles are on the explorer engine, however its a fairly good assumption that its also probably around 100k miles, maybe a little less. some people drive the wheels off their SUVs so its hard to tell.

questions number 1 is: Are a super good set of valvesprings necessary for the stock cam? Could i run my the springs from my HO still? Swap the HOs out for the explorers?

#2: "while im in there"....should i replace the timing chain? Again, 110k miles on the fox. Same question for thermostat!

#3: the GT40p heads can be drilled to accept EGR right? Ill sell the intake and get a earlier one or maybe spring for the sexy tubular GT40 intake, but i need to know if the p heads can accept the stock fox EGR stuff.

Thanks!

I'd use the HO valve springs since the HO is a higher lift cam AFAIK and check the timing chain while you're at it. If the timing chain is even close to needing it, I'd replace it. As for the EGR, it goes in the intake. Early Explorers had EGR provisions in the intake, and ALL explorer intakes are a less sexy clone of the GT40, so I don't think I'd bother selling it.

I wouldnt run the old springs, just due to the fact that they are old. while you are there might as well replace them.
same with the timing chain and thermostat, go ahead and replace those as well.
I am not sure about the heads. I want to say yes. I am sure someone else will chime in.

all that while youre in there stuff would be great if i had a tab at harrys and could get overnight parts from japan lol, but here in missouri i have to actually pay for stuff. I was just trying to see if you guys thought it was necessary/recommended. I was hoping for "itd be a good idea but not a big deal". but thats why i made the post. plus, there are so many valvesprings out there its hard to choose.

also, about the EGR stuff, i think i need to reread all the info i read before, but my understanding was that the p heads had the bosses cast, but they werent drilled and tapped for the egr tubes in the back of motor????????[/

the holes you speak of on the back are not EGR ports, thats the air injection holes, part of the smog system.

the EGR port is b/w the two center intake bolt holes on the intake flange of the head.

each head will have one exhaust port. that has a port going to the headers and a port going back towards the intake. this is where the exhaust gas for the EGR comes from.

as for valve springs i get a new set. no sense in running old used springs.

You are thinking about having heads drilled for the air injection but not willing to spring for a new set of valve springs.

I would replace the valves springs and the TC for one reason. They're old and have 110k on them. They might last they might not, why take the chance.

I you don't want to have the heads drilled for the thermactor air injection system you can fake it. They cross over tube that runs between the heads that are on your Mustang now will bolt up to the back of the P heads. It won't be functional but it will be in place.

oh ok, thanks for the clarification. its been a while since i researched them so my memory got a little fuzzy i guess.

anyways, alright, im in for new TC and VSs, i just wanted to know what you guys thought. those 2 things definitely arent somethign you want to cheap out on.

now the question is, whats the best company to buy them from?

I'd buy the springs from summit or jegs and get a cloyes tru-roller timing chain kit from rockauto, it was under $50 when I checked a couple days ago, I think, and cloyes is just about as good as it can get. :D

If ya wanna get rid of the stock springs, PM me, I'll be the stupid, cheap, lazy SOB using the old parts. :D

summit has everything you need to do the springs for just a little over 100.00

I am running explorer gt40's on my motor and you could tell a night and day diff when you put the stock exploder spring next to the new ones.
