Questions about oil

Since I have to get my car out of storage in a couple of weeks I was planning on doing a tune up on it. When it comes to the oil, I wanted to go full synthetic and was planning on putting Royal Purple in it. But since I only drive it about 500 miles during the spring/summer would I have to change it after taking it out of storage every year? If there is a different route I should take please let me know. Id hate spending that much money every year on expensive oil to have to change it with so little mileage.

You'd be surprised how well oil is made these days. I worked in the automotive aftermarket for 15+ years and every year there was a new advancement on a product. If you're using expensive synthetic you should be fine. With my daily driver I don't change the oil every 3000, more like 5000.

I just heard that I need to change it after taking it out of storage each year because of condensation. It was stored at the end of November so it would have only sat for a few months. Just not sure if Royal Purple would go bad in that amount of time...

No its not going to go bad. If the car is just sitting its not really going to get any condensation unless its started and run for awhile then shut off. Thats really not advised no matter what people say, that will cause condensation more then anything. I run 5,000 with mobil 1 in my daily driver despite the fact that the dealer keeps putting 3,000 on the stickers before oil changes. Hell it was 3,000 miles long before oil was advanced as it is now so there is no way I'm changing synthetic oil at 3,000 miles.

Thank You! I was more worried about the oil sitting for 4 months while the car was in storage than I was the mileage on the oil. That gives me a little more peace of mind then. I will just change it every other year than. That should be okay right? I live in Minnesota and my car is stored in a non-heated storage unit (if that makes any difference). Thank you again for your input. I really want to put Royal Purple in it.

I run my daily 5000 miles on Mobil 1 or Castrol synthetic depending on what's on sale at Walmart. I'm not sure that Royal Purple is so much better it warrants the price. Synthetic doesn't brake down, so all you have to worry about is it getting dirty or getting condensation. I ger condensation in my oil every once in awhile. Usually if I run the car for a few minutes it evaporates right out. Just check the dipstick when you take it out of storage.

I use Moblie 1 in my motor but here's a bit of a tip do your tune up just before you store your car that way it's sitting the winter months with fresh oil and not dirty oil. Starting your motor periodically won't harm your motor but you need to let it get good and hot if you start your motor and only let it run for 5 minutes and then shut it off you'll creat the condensation. Also fill your fuel tank and water in your tank can only cause rust if air gets to it so if the tanks full no rust.

Just to correct the last guy. Do not fill your tank with water. That's a really bad idea.

Thank you that makes sense. So could I get away with changing the oil every other year then? Remember that I only put around 500 miles on it a year.

With Synthetic oil, you should be able to do that. I don't think my next oil change will be for another year.

Oops i guess i should proof read things before i post my stuff, ya FUEL not water thanks Kurt. If you put so little miles on your car for the cost of an oil change me personally I'd still change my oil before putting it away but thats me.
