I have two questions I need some help with gang.

1- There’s a pulley between the tension pulley and the air-box, right above the AC pulley on my 00GT. It bolts right into the head/timing cover and it’s started making a steady whistling, whining noise on cold start ups. It seems to stop as soon as a little heat gets into the heads though.
Anyway, what’s this pulley called if I go to Ford and pick one up, or can I pick one of these up at a parts house? I’m guessing the bearing is on it’s way out.

2- My air-box has started making a very loud moaning, humming sound. Also it makes a thumping or bumping sound if I barely tap the accelerator, kinda like AC ducts opening and closing. The moaning, humming is extremely loud if I put my ear close to the air-box. This also seems to stop after a little heat is generated in the engine. I did have a Mac CAI and never heard this sound before but decided to go back to the stock setup with a K&N filter.
Anywho, anyone have this problem before, is it a sign the MAF is going bad? I’ve checked and doubled checked the assembly from the TB to the air-box everything is sealed up tight, even tried replacing the snorkel/silencer with no luck.

Idler pulley.

I dont know about the airbox noise. , is the filter in there tight? maybe it is moving. You will not hear a noise from the MAF. It has no moving parts.

Thanks for replying forpit2000gt

The moaning air-box has had me pulling my hair out for a few days now. Today however, it didn’t make any noise when I started the car. The only difference in the last few day was the temperature outside, it has been down in the low 30's and it was in the mid 40's today.
As I mentioned above everything is fitted together from snorkel to TB nice and snug.
Before replacing the snorkel I checked the filter for play (any kind of movement), with the engine running and not. I couldn’t move the filter, spin it or anything of the like. It too seems to be nice and snug inside the air-box.

I really need to find out what this is, it’s a bit embarrassing to start the car in a crowded parking lot and have it sound as if I have a sub-woofer mounted under the hood with the volume all the way up. He[[ you can hear it easily 8 to 10 parking spaces away, empty parking lot... all the way across it I would imagine.

Maybe someone else will have a clue.
Thank again,

-Cale

What year is your Mustang? Before my '00 GT was totaled, there was a humming sound coming from the throttle body or the upper air intake after the first start-up in the morning. It only happened on the cooler mornings though. I read a while back on the Corral that this was common. I even brought the car to a dealer, they kept it overnight and could not duplicate the problem after starting it 4 times. Whatever...

Idler pulley can be found anywhere not just Ford. I got mine at Autozone for 15 dollars. My guess is Ford will probably charge twice that.

Almost sounds like some kind of back compression. My car does this sometimes at start-up. It will run for a second the 'pop' from what sounds like the throttle body and stall. I wait a second and it will fire right up. Only does it when it is cold or I haven't ran the car for a few days. The reason I use the word compression is it sounds like air forced out at high pressure. Don't know what causes it but it happens to me occasionally.

Thanks guys, it definitely is coming from the air-box not the TB. Just leaning in over the fender above the factory intake tube and you are strongly drawn right to the air-box. This isn’t a slight moan/humming that you have to listen for, when it does this it’s loud, it’s announcing itself to the world! I guess I’ll throw the paper filter in and see what it does.

Still could be some sort of back pressure traveling through the induction tube. I can't think of anything that would cause any noise from the air box itself. Sounds wierd no matter what. Let us know if you figure it out.
