OK what causes a clutch to chatter only when its hot, if I dive it when its cold it is smooth. After it warms up its noticeable. Also if I'm cruising, for example in 2nd gear, and the rpms are at about 2000 and i let off the throttle on deceleration it will buck, also if I'm cruising and i kinda tap the gas real quick to get the car to jump forward it bucks also. There seems like there is a lot of slop in the drive train, when i shift into second i get a thud and a lot of drive train movement? rear end, drive shaft, u joints, trans or motor mounts?? could it be any of them???

I'd have postulated it was two separate issues. A chattering clutch occurs as you engage or disengage it.

The bucking upon deceleration (dashpot) is likely a tune/sensor issue. Ditto for stabbing the gas - those are transient maneuvers which actually have a fair amount of code to make happen smooth.

If your clutch is chattering, as you let the pedal out, the car can shake (it feels like if you accidentally put it in 3rd gear and try to leave from a light). That should be separate from what you describe unless your clutch is simply slipping, in which case you'd know it and you'd have issues across the board (WOT issues, etc).

Where is the point of engagement (near the top or bottom of the pedal travel)? If it's near the bottom, that can explain the thud while shifting.

I would start with codes - see if your TPS took a dump or something (TPS is huge with transient maneuvers).

Good luck.

thanks for the reply. the clutch enganges right at about the brake pedal...i took the car out and brake touqued it and it atctualy seems better,( the chattering)

If the chatter occurs at the POE (point of engagement), you might have to remove some glaze. :rlaugh: In the old days we'd find an empty stretch of road (I mean a closed road course) and light 'em up................... There's always a chance this will make it worse (we were prepared to replace the clutch anyhow).

If the clutch really is chattering, replacing it and resurfacing the flywheel (or replacing it - when they get hot, they glaze and can crack) is probably the answer.

If you haven't, just keep driving it (heat cycling the clutch). The issue will probably get better or worse in short order. It just depends how bad it is.

MHO.
Good luck.

thanks hissin.:nice: ill see what it does over the next week....by the way the clutch and flywheel are new

FWIW, since you mention the clutch and flywheel are brand new, during the break-in period (clutches and flywheels each have break-ins, respectively) some packages will chatter. If you have an organic disk, this is pretty likely.

Don't get on it for awhile - you cannot undo glazing and hotspotting on a new clutch (I give clutches 500 miles personally. Most folks are easy on them for far fewer miles). Just let those parts bed together and get familiar.
