Quick electric fan CFM question

Hey all,

Quick question. Did a couple of searches and found lots of recommendations and such, but I was hoping for some hard figures. I know the taurus, SN 94-95 and Mark VIII fans are all good, but what is the CFM rating of each? Is the SN and the Mark the same or close? Thanks alot!

dude-

your smartest bet would be the monster! hahahah MKVIII fan. It flows 4300 CFM out of the box. Get the 97-98 model though-better fan/blades design. The only other fan that beats iit is the Dodge Viper fan 4600 cfm.-But lots of fabbing to do on that one. Everything else is basically inferior and flows a whole lot less. Even the best Black magic fan only flows 3300 cfm.

I put in a Black Magic extreme with 3300 cfm's worth of flow. Works great on my N/A car. Fits like a glove, no rigging to get it to fit. I like it alot so far.

You can get the Mark Viii fan off ebay for less than $50.00 smakers. Flows better than any black tragic fan. Be prepared to trim the shroud down to get it to fit, but for that outlay of $$ there is no question that the Mark VIII is one of the best choices

Hey Andres, if you find a few mark 8's in the yards down there, grab me a fan. I'll make it worth your time. You should have no problem being that you live in the land of the old-man-sedan.

So far I am leaning towards an SN95 fan. I simply don't think I'll have the space for a MarkVIII. With a tape measure it only looks like I have about 4'' clearance between the radiator and the water pump.

Take a look at the dual 11 inch spals then if you are conserned with space. That was my second choice but I always do things the hard way.

Dude-

You have to cut the MKVIII fan down, otherwise-It will never fit. i htink i cut almost 3/4 of an inch off-to make clearance and its a bit tight. but dayuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum-that fan is an animal. put it this way-You'll never have to think about ever running warm ever again. how deos that make you feel! ahahhahaha

I have a fan from a 93-97 Lincoln town car that is 18" and is only about 4" thick. I plan to make some brackets with an air shroud to mount it. The town cars had 5.0's in them with A/C and every other option you can imagine. The fan looks big enough to do the job.

Yep, went to the local LKQ and picked up two Taurus SHO fans and a Mark VIII fan in one trip. That Lincoln fan is never going to fit, my radiator is just way too big to accomodate it. I'm curious how much of the Taurus fan has to go? Is it simply a matter of trimming for space or does the shroud have to be flush with the radiator surface to cool properly?

The shroud should seal around the radiator closely so that it doesn't suck air from the gaps. It should suck air through the radiator core and not from the gaps in the shroud.

That was what we were thinking. At the moment I have twin 3600 CFM fans (at least that was what is written on them) that were not keeping the car as cool as I'd like. The shroud was a big part of the problem though. Basically whomever built the setup used a flat piece of sheet metal that fixed directly to the radiator surface, effectively blocking off 2/3 of the radiator to good airflow. To remedy this, we went to Home Depot and picked up some inch thick lightweight wooden stakes and basically framed the sheet metal shroud so that it could pull air from the whole radiator. This was done last night as a test before we started hacking up OEM shrouds from my junkyard adventure. Obviously the shroud is more effective if its more shapely formed, but I'm hoping this will do the trick. The true test will be driving around in the heat in this Central Florida sun.

As far as the OEM fans go though, how does once go about the shroud trimming? I've read all the MarkVIII write ups, but it appears to have a much flatter shroud surface as compared with the Taurus fan. If I shave it for clearance purposes, will it be less effective considering it doesnt cover my whole radiator? It appears that it'll leave about 3-4 inches in both width and length uncovered. What do you think JR?

BTW, if things work out as they are, I think you have a new MarkVIII fan Nick.

Dude-If i can fit the MarkVIII with my fluidyne big ass-rad, yuou can definitely fit yours. hahahahaha it will be worth it to you, trust me. ya hve to cut it down.

I too have a big ass-rad, 3-core Ron Davis. Trust me, I'd like to see it fit, it just doesnt seem like its possible with my setup - hence the alternatives.

Unless-you have a S?C-it will fit. it wont sit perfectly dead center-You have to adjust it. i too-was in your same boat, it took some time and lots of moving it around-and then finally-i got it right. It was a PITA-but well worth it.

Have any pics??? The only way that I can fathom it working is if I trimmed the sides of the shroud. As it stands the motor assembly is like 4'', which is the amount of room I have. I'd have to completely trim the shroud off.

sorry, dont have any pics. but i did have it off last week. And i can tell you that it comes 4 inches. you have to saw 3/4 off and your left 1/4 which is fine. Then you buy some flex-a-lite rubber seal that they use off summit on the Black tragic fans and it makes a complete flush seal. You use 2 "L" brackets and hook it to the upper rad, and then get on the bottom and drill 2 holes in the car frame rad support-and that holds everything in place, nice and tight.
you will be exactly 1/2 inch away from the water pump pulley-But it will clear, trust me-Mine fits perfect and never runs any higher than 185 degrees.
Oh-when you put it in, You have to take the water pump pulley off and come in from the side, or from the bottom upwards-either way-it will fit and clear.

JRICKTER is correct, same website i used to put mine on... Thumbs up man. you dont need 4 inches of shroud, hahahhaa dude- 1/4 of shroud is fine, actually-the closer the fan blades the better, more efficient.
