O, I found a car. It is a black 66 mustang coupe, 139,000 miles with the original 6 cyl., and 3 speed manual tranny. The paint is new, tranny is rebuilt, interior is nice, body has been worked on. The rust had been cut out, and replaced with metal, and not bondo. No rust, runs good. I can get it for $4,000. Should I talk him down? Is it worth $4,000 or am I crazy? I have to decide today is what sucks. Please help me!

If the underlying structure (frame straight, frame rails good, steering & brakes good) and the body is a good as you say, then the price is not outrageously high. If you have a structurally sound car with a good body and mechanicals, everything else is relatively minor and inexpensive to repair or upgrade.

Talk him down? Of course! You always negotiate lower and I would guess he'd drop to $3500, if he's asking $4000.

Just remember this is YOUR decision and YOUR responsibility to ensure the car is as good as he says and as good as it appears.

Good Luck!

car looked great! Paint looked very good, minimal rust, nothign major at all. Drove fine, then about after 5 minutes, it died on me and my friend. And after that, it wouldn't idle right, or anything. So it def. needs a new alternator, new battery, probably carb, just to run as it is. HE couldn't even make it back to his house in it. He left it on the side of the road. I'm definately not spending $4k on this. I'm gonna make some offers after the auction ends though.

All used cars need work, just a question of how much work they need, and whether or not you can/want to work on it to get it right. Personally I would not give 4000.00 for a 6 cyl 3 speed no matter how nice it was, but thats me.
