re-build kit question?

summit sells 2 kits for the same price except one says .010 in. rod/main bearings and the other says standard rod/main bearings. what does it mean? what is the diff? which one should i get?

the .010 rod/main bearings are a little thicker for a re-ground crankshaft. If you aren't regrinding your crank, then get the standard.

Is the .010 in. for the outer or inner diameter of the rod/main bearings?

Inner. They are "Undersize" meaning the are ten thousandths "smaller" than standard. Because if you get the crankshaft ground, they will take an even ten thousandths off all the main and rod journals. The crankshaft journals will be ten thousandths "smaller" than stock when measured with a micrometer. So, the bearings need to be smaller to fill the gap.

You need to have a machine shop check out your crankshaft to determine if it needs reground or not first. If it does, then they will do that work, and you order the ten under rebuild kit. If not, then they will polish the journals to remove any small scratches or deformities, and you can order the standard size rebuild kit. The bottom line is that your machine shop needs to let you know what to get.

You can determine this yourself with a shop manual and a mic, but it's far safer and faster to have a machine shop do it. They do it every day. If its a good shop, they will not make any mistakes.
