Re-covering visors

15 years in the sun .... yeah, they kinda need to be re-covered.

they are actually made of cardboard with the fabric attached with glue, so they are going to have to be completely rebuilt.

More power to ya but i think your past the point where your time outweighs the cost of a clean used set (If they even exist) lol

yeah, i know what you mean ... but, well you know me ... i'm a cheap bastard, and so far, i'm into it for about $20.

a pair of clean used ones i bet run over $100. i'll call prestigemustang tomorrow and get a price and post it.

either way, i'm way past the point of no return. good thing i like doing stuff like this.

As long as you're having fun, then your time and effort are worth it. To be honest, very little that we do on our cars is financially worthwhile anymore, if you count the time you put into the work. To get what I mean, pretend you're doing this work for someone else. How much would you charge per hour? Make it really cheap, say $10/hr. If you spend 10 hours on something and spend $20, you've really spend $120.

But if you enjoyed the work, and you're doing it for yourself, the time is irrelevant.

Looks good. What kind of fabric do you plan on using? I thought about re covering my visors too but until your post I didn't realize the fabric was completely glued on like that. I'll probably just bring mine to an upholstery shop.

i got some stretchy cotton knit stuff, which i was going to try to use.

but the more i think about it, the more i started thinking that approach will end up with something that has hard and sharp edges.

what i really need is something like that very durable cardboard stuff ford used so i can essentially duplicate their design.

for now, my current idea is to make a smaller center section with the necessary structural integrity (with the arm, mirror, and retainer), and then covering that with this very thin black carpet i found at home depot. hopefully this approach will result with something pretty close to a stock visor ...

chaos, any idea how much they would charge for something like that? it seems to me they would do something similar to what i am doing.

I'm thinking that the visors for the 'verts are the same through '04. If that's the case they will be available.

cool ... not that it's any rush or anything ... i was just curious. i'm past the point of no return on this thing anyway.

if (or rather, probably when!) i fail (or give up) on this project, it'll be too late to take them to an upholsterer, so i'd need to buy a pair from somewhere.

The more I mess with the hard-board approach, the more I think a heavy duty cardboard approach is better ...

I'm thinking you need some 1/16" particle or paper board. You might be able to dampen it and get the shape you are looking for.

why not use your boards as a center section then use the cardboard as a sandwich. it will be thicker but will have the softer edges and yet be more ridged, just cut the center a tad smaller.

I am thinking along those lines too. The hardboard would definately provide rigidity, it is just too rigid though, so it is a good candidate for the center section.

Yeah, paper board sounds like it would be good. I have yet to find it yet.

I suspect that particle board won't be flexible enough. I soaked the hardboard for a week, and it still won't bend much without breaking.

Even something like a durable plastic that is rigid but flexible would work. I'm still looking for the perfect material.

There is a crafts place called Michael's, maybe they have something.

Barnes and Noble did ... after I take the pages out, I think this will be really good ...

It is a hardcover book that is 15" tall, 8" wide and has about 75 pages.

And they were on sale. I bought 2 of them.

Hmmmm, turns out that 15" is just a little shorter than the main part of the visor (not including the part after where it bends); I actually need more like 16" or 17". So now I need to decide if I'm willing to live with visors that are a little shorter, or if I'm going to try to extend this, or go back to the hard board approach, or what the F I should do.

Hey, at least it keeps the little grey cells going. This is par for the course when hot rodding.
