Rear axle bearing kickin my arse.

I was told these weren't too hard to pull if you had a puller. I have a puller but it aint coming out. I should have stuck with my original idea and shop for another rear end with 3:55's like I want. I swear doing a rear end swap would be easier than trying to get this bearing out. But since I'm in it does anyone have any suggestions on how to get out a VERY stubborn rear bearing? Thanks......

Might have to heat it up....just put 355's in my brothers car last night! They came right out. But I have seen where you have to had to heat them up with a torch...

Are you using the slide hammer style puller, that usually works.

Man it was only a couple of months ago did I have the WORST time getting my passenger side axle bearing out. I heated it up as much as possible and it was still a pain in the rear to get it out with a slide hammer. I ended up fabbing up a little piece of metal and tac welding it to the axle bearing, used the slide hammer on the end piece and got that sucker out.

Make sure your heating up the axle tube... not the bearing Heating up the bearing only makes it expand tighter into the tube. If you heat the axle tube, it expands away from the bearing, making it loosen its grip. Spray the heck out of it... heat the tube, possibly give it a whack, and that slide hammer should knock it loose. I had one that was so bad, I used a dremel to slowly cut it out bit by bit. Some are harder than others, some simply pop out with a finger...

You need a slide hammer puller and you need to hit it so hard you think you'll pull the whole car off the stands. Or, some people have reported success by pulling both axles, then sticking a long piece of metal conduit all the way through the axle housing assembly and up to the back of the offending bearing, then hammering on the conduit.

You have to pull both axels to put the axel bearings in.... but I know we had that beech rocking on the stands for the pinion bearing!!! Yes we had two jacks under it for extra insurance....LOL

Yea, I don't have an oxy acetylene rig but I got a friend coming by with one this week. We'll get it out. MFE92, I've heard that trick but it seems that you would have to pull the gears. If I change out my gears, I may do that. Might be looking around for some 3:55's. Car's stock so that should wake it up a little. Has 2:73's in it now.

I don't see anything in there about changing both bearings, and you don't need to pull both axles to change one bearing. Unless, of course, you're going to use the conduit method, which does not require pulling the diff. The conduit is a lot smaller diameter than the axles, so it fits through the holes in the side gears and the carrier.

Sound's like 3:55's are a done deal. That's about it for me though. I do like my gas mileage as well. The 92 I had had 3:27's. It got 28mpg on the turnpike at 80mph and I ran in the 13's! I think 3:55's will still give me some decent mpg.

How you going to change a bearing then if you dont pull the axel if ita one or both..?

Were you dropped on your head as a baby? You only need to remove the axle that gives access to that one bearing to change that one bearing. You do not need to remove both axles to change one bearing.

Same problem.. Used heat on tubes.. No luck... Went to the dremel with a small sanding drum..put a rag or somthing in the tube if you use this method to keep the grit from going in the tube. Also put the be bearing in the freezer. It will slide right in with no prob if you do.

That's how we did mine. We had a 6' piece of 2" pipe and the bearing just popped right out.

Heat the housing, run a candle around the outer edge of the bearing inside the tube so that the wax gets wicked it.

Then slide hammer plus bearing puller and it should come out.

You're using these right?
