Rear axle whine

Just thought I'd pass on my experience with this issue with everyone. My 08 GT started having a pretty good whine in the rear end from 65-75 mph while under load. It started a few months ago at around 3k miles  Apparently it's a pretty common problem. Well a month ago Ford came out with a TSB for it and it involves an axle dampening weight on each side of the axle. The holes are even already there! Well this took about 50% of the whine away ( I was supprised) so I decided to let it be rather than tear into it. The car has 12k on it now ( I drive a lot) so I decided to try one more thing. Well guess what....Royal Purple 75w140 Max Gear took the rest of the whine out! :nice: I've read a lot of good things about this stuff and at $15 a quart at NAPA it better be good. Needless to say I couldn't be happier. If anyone has a little whine in theirs this may well be worth a shot. Sorry for the long post but wanted to pass this along.:D

Thanks, I'll give that a shot... I have a little whine also; mostly while turning though.

Thats sounds like maybe a lack of friction modifier in the fluid. Its required with most gear oils. The Royal Purple already has it so thats a savings also. I did not add any when I did the fluid swap and have had no strange noises from the limited slip.

imho adding the friction modifier in addition to the RP fluid is the way to go.

I tried the RP fluid alone and had noticeable wheel slippage in turns. PIA in the rain. I removed some of the diff fluid and added a bottle of the Ford friction modifier. After a few days it was back to normal. I think my dealer charged me 6$ for the bottle.

I don't know if the issue is exaggerated by the amount of wear I have.
40k, 100ish passes and noticed more matter in the fluid than I would have liked at change.

i have whine but its from my f'n 4:10's got dicked over and my ford racing gears were the batch made by motive, they work great, they just f'n whine.

Check the install i bet the whine from your 4.10 are from an improper install. Very common most shop don't set the pinion depth. Who did the install?

not the install, Steeda installed my gears.

They even went over the install twice to be sure and they have done countless gear installs, some gear sets just whine point blank. esp when u go into the 4.10's,4.30's etc. Seems to be hit or miss but supposely their was couple batches of ford gears done by motive gears and those were most of the ones that had some whine to them.

it only whines in 4th and 5th, well i guess thats when im generating enough speed to hear it for the gear to be spinning so fast.

when i drag race i dont hear nothing of course my engine is screaming then lol.

If your gears whine on an S197, take it from me.... No matter what you do... no matter if it goes away for a couple hundred miles... It WILL come back. I sold my black 07 GT because it wasn't fixable... Literally. New axle assembly... 3 different gears... Ford Engineer... No luck. :) Sell it now and save yourself many headaches.
